Default Impulse buying

I promised myself when I started upgrading to Blu Ray that unlike my DVD days this time I would have a collection of films I genuinely loved, with exceptions being made for guilty pleasures, and films with nostalgia value.

But it's happened again! Flicking through my collection lately I was surprised how many titles I've bought that I now think "eh, was that really worth getting"? Titles that I bought too quickly after enjoying them on SKY then realising I don't really need to see them again, or that they wasn't as good as I first thought.

I've just sold...Jurassic World, Bring it On, Drag me to Hell, Revolutionary Road, Training Day, American Sniper, Source Code, Logans Run and Grace, to try and tidy my collection up again.

Do any of you find this to be a problem? In future I think I need a cool off period of a couple of weeks after seeing a movie to make sure I really liked it enough to own. Sometimes you feel like a title just should be in a collection too. I'd be interested to know how many of you who buy these classy highbrow titles by Criterion for example actually watch them, at least more than once. Or the Disney collectors? Sure the Disney titles are highly regarded classic important pieces of cinema but how many of you come home from work kick of your shoes and watch 'Bambi'?

Thoughts please?

I have a very strict rule that I only upgrade my absolute favorite movies. I refuse to buy something on BD for the simple reason of, I have it on DVD, and need to upgrade. Or it's cheap. I'll buy it. I know a lot of people on here do that, but not me. When DVD first came out. I bought everything under the sun, just to have it. I won't make that same mistake with BD. That's why I like to keep my BD collection nice and small. Quality over quantity. Thats why I wont make the same mistake with BD. And whatever succeeds BD, I will have an even smaller collection of that, as I will be even more selective.

What I do now is I rent movies on amazon instant video. It's quick, easy, and convenient. It's my new blockbuster video, and WOW what a difference.

I don't quite have the impulse itch that you were struggling with, but I was blind-buying a lot of Criterions during the B&N sales each year. This resulted in more than a few films I didn't connect with as much as I hoped, and sold them off soon afterwards.

Because of this I got "burnt out" on collecting Criterions and this year I did not pick up any during the sale. Moving forward I intend to be quite selective.

I used to impulse buy and blind-buy much more than I do now. Trying to keep the collection lean and only have what I know I'll watch repeatedly or what I simply can't NOT have, even if it's less rewatchable (like the Apu Trilogy or Citizen Kane). I've burned some money on blind-buying Criterions that ended up either being one-time watches or just flat-out not my cup of tea.

I'm trying to be strong on 'Crimson Peak' at the moment.

Watched it the other night and thought it was very good, but come on wait it out a bit.

Not sure it's worth a place.

I want a collection of films I like , not just a collection of films. Not to mention the financial aspect. I think part of the problem is as you get older you'e craving things to enjoy. I have quite a few fads and whims, I'm into Pop Vinyls at the minute. Anything to escape from the horrors of having to work etc. Sometimes this desire makes me a bit rash in my decisions.

I buy too many and I know that. Either I buy something I really want to see, or I buy cheap. Yesterday a store was closing and I grabbed a bunch of decent looking blus for $3 each. Can't pass something like that up! If it's a new release I really want to see, I don't mind paying full pop. Still cheaper than a trip for two to the theater these days. Especially if you factor in snacks, drinks and comfort.

I'm a total impulse buyer. Ever since I upgraded to 4k, I can't help myself. I want them all. Just ordered The Neon Demon from amazon.de this morning, followed by Suicide Squad and The Town all in 4k from Best Buy.

I bought 6 or 7 blus from the Barnes & Noble sale and 4 from the ScreenArchives sale.

I also spend a lot of money on baseball merchandise from mlb.com every month.

I stopped impulse buying nearly a year ago because of all the wasted money on titles I wasn't going to watch more than once. I think Tuesday was the first time in months I had bought two new releases on one day (BFG & Pete's Dragon).

You can always organize your collection. Have one shelf unit devoted to your favorite films and then another unit to your random collection. I've decided mine into Criterion shelfs and then i have boutique label shelves and then the box set shelf. Tv shows shelves. Then the rest is just alphabetical

I used to impulse buy A LOT! Buying titles just because they were cheap, to complete a series/franchise, or because it was said that "you must own this title if you love movies". When I lived in the city and had easier access to stores, it was just therapeutic to go to a string of stores every Tuesday and Saturday, and just buy movies for the ever growing collection. I'll admit that a lot of that was wasted money or I loved it before, but now I rarely think about the movie. I'm very selective now and my collection has actually shrunk.

Personally, besides just a genuine love for movies, a lot of my impulse buying back in the day stemmed from having friends over and being "the movie guy". I kinda liked having mine and everyone else's favorite movie. I don't care about that now lol. I'll blind buy maybe one new release every couple of months due to the fact that it's expensive taking a family of 4 to the movie theaters (with your dad and sister never resisting the concession stand. Plus we live about an hour away from any theater, so that's gas).

When blockbuster was going out of business I bought over 40 blus and I just cleaned up my collection and realized there were at least 20 movies that I'd never probably watch so I sold them but now I only buy movies that I no I will like or if I blind buy something it's a movie that I wanted to see no more buying movies just to buy them even if it's dirt cheap I'd rather have a quality collection over quantity

Sure. I even went wild a few months ago and blindly bought about a hundred dvds because they were on clearance for only like 10 cents each. But I only want to watch a small handful of them. I do try to set price points though and usually don't buy new movies during release week.

For me, it depends on the price. I'm not going to drop $20 on a movie I've never seen. However, for instance, I did drop $3.99 on The Goonies on Black Friday, even though I've never seen it. It's a classic, it looks like something I might enjoy, and you can't beat that price. I do that sort of thing all the time. All the Criterion movies I want are ones I've seen before.

I try to stick to a list rather than impulse buy otherwise I'll burn a lot of money on movies I 'kinda like' or are 'classics'. I'm to the point now where I think I've gone full on hipster and only want to buy movies I think most people wouldn't like and don't buy the pop movies for the most part.

My rule is I can get pretty much any 70's/80's action/crime movie and pretty much any sci-fi/fantasy movie made after 2001: A Space Odyssey. Those are my beloved genres, eras and styles. I collect that stuff even if I don't love the movie.

Everything else has to be something I genuinely like a lot and want to watch a lot. However I do end up buying a lot of crap just because it's priced pretty much the same as a digital HD rental. Anything that's $5 and looks interesting is hard to resist. I also tend to buy too many horror movies because the line between sci-fi/fantasy and horror can be pretty blurry at times. When I do my occasional sell-offs it is almost always horror movies I get rid of.

When I first got a Blu-ray player, I promised myself that I would only buy one Blu-ray a month.

So far, so good. Right now, I'm on April, 2179.

When I grabbed Smurfs 2 for a buck and a half I realized that ANYTHING has the potential to be an impulse buy.

When I first got into blus I said the same thing, I'm only going to get my absolute favorite movies. The problem is I'm a sucker for $5 blu sales. For $5, if it's something that I was sorta interested in seeing I'll just grab it, it's close to the price of a rental anyway and if I don't love it enough to keep it I can give it away. That seems reasonable enough, but then I get too many and here we with over a hundred movies and I've only seen about half of them.

December is not a good time for me. I rarely buy blus during the year, but I bought like 20 on BF week, and I'm sure there are more to come. The shelf where I organize the blus is full, I'm going to have to do some rearranging.
