Default ps3 profile 2.0?

didn't see this here yet...

Quote:
War and Saw IV, streeting from Lionsgate on Blu-ray and standard-definition DVD on Jan. 1 and Jan. 22, respectively, will carry networking features, confirmed the studio’s senior VP of DVD production, Miguel Casillas, during a panel discussion at Tuesday’s High-Def 2.0 conference here.
Quote:
Studio executive panelists as well as manufacturers speaking at the conference acknowledged the current absence of BD-Live players. Yet, Eklund said Sony and other studios anticipate that the PlayStation 3 will soon become one such player, likely through firmware updates, as the console already allows users to download game-related content.

Eklund added that firmware should be released for the PS3 this month that would upgrade the console to fully playback picture-in-picture interactivity, another type of high-def bonus feature that is popular in HD DVD titles but not yet available with Blu-ray titles due to few compatible players.

“It’s the studio’s assumption” that PS3 will be a BD-Live player, said Eklund.

Excellent news! Makes my $850 dollar investment even better. (that doesn't include games, just what I paid for it off e-bay the week after launch, the day I returned from Iraq. That is how bad I wanted one, I couldn't even wait for stores to get more in. )

i love how lions gate the smallest major blu-ray studio is brining blu-ray interactivity to the next level and not big companies (such as fake pip and special feturs seen on crank and decent)

I will view this as a slap in the face, if there are 2.0 titles and no standalone 2.0 players. I will view it as Sony trying to force me to buy a PS3 (with an ulterior motive of baiting me to buy game software for it). I also think this will be a bad marketing move, providing lots of ammo for the HDDVD camp.

Since this mentions Jan there will be at least one the Denon. But since CES is the first full week of Jan. I would guess we will see some players announced there and they might be very close to street at end of show. Kind of like the Panasonic annoucment ready to ship in 7 days in stores in about 2 weeks.

This is BIG news.

There are a number of hd-dvd fans over on other forums admitting that this might well turn them purple.

I think it's good, though truthfully I don't see myself really using these features.

I hope this is true, but I'll believe it when I see it. So much gets delayed (like the Denon) and so much is rumor, that it would be a mistake to take anything for granted. And I understand the way many of you feel about the internet features not being of big interest to you, but I don't want to assume that there won't be anything of interest there, either. Even if it is only trailers, I am interested. My wife and I always watch trailers and often pause, go back and replay parts of them. Weird, I know. Also, for many of you, I know that demoing your HT equipment to friends is important. They will be wondering what is up if you can not demo everything on the disc.

My first BD player was an impulse buy, you know, and now I am itching to upgrade, but I want something that is at least "near future" proof. It is with all of my willpower that I do not by the new Panasonic player right now.

he also said they "anticipate" and it "should" be coming. i think he's just playing it safe and is being noncommittal.

forcing you to buy a PS3? Why would you think that Sony is responsible if other blu-ray CE providers don't get a 2.0 player out 1st?
Besides, you can't be forced into a purchase. stick with your current equipment if your so against getting a PS3. Don't be angry with Sony for actually providing support for 2.0 though. that's ridiculous.

Well the "final" 1.1 spec has nothing about networking features.
I thought it was understood that 2.0 would be "optional" not mandatory.
Why the outcry now to become net enabled like HD-DVD?

Seems like the PS3 getting 2.0 out would just motivate the others to give their players the same. I'm going to guess that if the PS3 gets it, all the Sony standalones will get it via firmware as well and the future ones will have it.

Last official word was "Fall" i.e. before 12/21. Has there been a later, official announcement of delay, 'cuz I haven't seen one.
