Default The Escapees (Jean Rollin/Brigitte Lahaie)

The Escapees Blu-ray

NEWS
https://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=16177

Quote:
The Redemption label will release on Blu-ray cult director Jean Rollin's The Escapees a.k.a. Les paumées du petit matin (1981), starring Brigitte Lahaie, Laurence Dubas, Christiane Coppé, and Marianne Valiot. The release will be available for purchase on May 26.

Synopsis: Jean Rollin's The Escapees revisits the director's fascination with pairs of women who wander, dreamlike, through a modern dystopia (Requiem for a Vampire, Two Orphan Vampires). Two female patients one rebellious (Laurence Dubas), the other despondent (Christiane Coppé) flee the grounds of a mental hospital and drift across the French countryside. After finding refuge among a band of gypsy-like exotic dancers, they cross paths with a petty criminal (Marianne Valiot), an aging fortune-teller (Louise Dhour) and a quartet of swingers (including Brigitte Lahaie) with sinister intentions. Punctuated by moments of unexpected violence and lyrical beauty (as when the emotionless Marie returns to life in a vacant ice rink), The Escapees is among Rollin's most personal films, and has been remastered in HD from the original 35mm negative.

Special Features/Technical Specs:

Mastered in HD from the original 35mm negative
French audio track with optional English subtitles
One Day in Paris: An Interview with Jean Rollin (2008, 28 min.)

Weird thing is, it went 'unavailable', then the pre-order listing came back, but with the BD item in my cart becoming a DVD (!) item. I thought perhaps it was only going to come out on DVD now, but there was a new listing for the BD.

If you have put through the original pre order I would cancel it and wait until after the release date.

Amazon have a poor history of shipping the wrong item on pre orders for titles like this. It happened with The Strange Colour of Your Body's Tears where they shipped the DVD to people who placed a pre order on the original listing for the blu ray and again for people who pre ordered the Long Hair of Death blu ray and received the Werewolf Woman blu ray instead.

Best Buy has a nice pre-order price of $13.99, but the listing says dvd with a picture of the blu ray. I don't want to order and have to deal with a return.

This film sounds like it might be intriguing, but I'm going to wait until it's actually released and see if anybody reviews it. I hope it isn't a shot-on-video cheapie.

Does anyone know if this will be in the original 1.66:1 widescreen ratio? Hope its not the 1.33:1 version available on DVD.

Another question, are the redemption blu-rays available numbered on the spine? As I own Jean Rollin's movies on the original UK redemption DVDs they are numbered on the spine which is annoying because I always place my favourite directors movies in the order they were released so if they are out of that order on the Blu-ray, I might wait until they are released on Blu-ray somewhere that won't number them.

1. I don't believe this release will be cropped.

2 All of the Redemption titles have numbers on the spine, but I don't arrange them according to the spine numbers. (Same with the Jezebel label):

Awesome. Thanks so much for this. I suppose I won't let it bother me too much, I just want them on Blu-ray. It will be great to see The Escapees in its original aspect ratio. I'm just hoping now they will release The Sidewalks of Bangkok and Killing Car. Have you seen these movies? Both of them have only been released in 4:3 I'm hoping they can remaster them for HD. Although, I hear Killing Car has no usable negative that exists now, which I'm hoping isn't true. Then his later films after Two Orphan Vampires. Maybe a whole box set of his movies on Blu-ray. Anyways thanks again.

You are welcome, Chris

I think you should go for Redemption's U.S. titles because the entire catalog will not be replicated in the UK. More importantly, typically the quality of the presentations is excellent -- almost without exception you get nice organic transfers. I personally have been very happy with Redemption's output.

Killing Car: I am unsure this is possible at the moment. This film needs some serious restoration and I don't know if Redemption have the funding for it.

Anyway. I am really looking forward to this release.

Take care, Chris.

The Escapees Blu-ray REVIEW

I really like this film. Very atmospheric and unusually poetic. It has been pushed aside by fans of Rollin's more traditional Gothic/vampire films, but I think that it is very nice -- a mix of Varda's Vagabond and some of Brisseau's films (À l'aventure). The Night of the Hunted is a very good companion piece
