Awesome man, i enjoyed this since i taped it off TV as a kid in the 80s and had a bootleg DVD since 2009 waiting for an official release.
Now my dream has come true, thanks to Scream Factory and time for fans to throw away their bootleg DVDs. |

I saw this on TV as a kid. Svengoolie aired it a month or two ago, and I recorded it, since it's never been released on home video. It didn't hold up completely, but was still enjoyable, so I'll happily pick up a Blu from Shout.

![]() ![]() Richie, a young boy played by Scott Sealey, is struggling to come to terms with the divorce of his parents, played respectively by Kerwin Mathews (The 7th Voyage of Sinbad) and Elaine Devry (Man-Trap). One evening, when he is staying with his father at the family's mountain cabin, the two of them are attacked by a werewolf and the father is bitten. The boy tries to convince his parents and the police of the truth, but his panicked recollections are dismissed as the work of an overactive imagination due to his family situation. When his father turns into a werewolf during the next full moon, and mutilated bodies of murdered locals are discovered, Richie must find a way to warn his mother before they both become the next victims. The PG-rated 1973 horror film, The Boy Who Cried Werewolf, which was directed by creature feature extraordinaire Nathan Juran (20 Million Miles to Earth, The 7th Voyage of Sinbad), incorporates just enough intensity and implied bloodshed to engage adult fans of scary cinema, but it is also mild enough to serve as a gateway drug to introduce younger viewers to the genre. This movie is so outlandishly 1970s that it should have a warning label. We've got a California forest setting, we've got a hippie commune, and we've even got a rather eccentric child psychologist, played by George Gaynes, whom I will always associate with his role as Henry Warnimont in the Punky Brewster television series and with his recurring appearances as Commandant Lassard in the Police Academy films. Finally, on the 1970s front, we've got two scenes of vehicles flipping over and over down mountain embankments. (I've been watching movies for 46 years, and the sight of a vehicle tumbling down a mountain embankment until it explodes never gets old.) Be on the lookout for the talented supporting actor, Robert J. Wilke (High Noon, The Magnificent Seven), as a local sheriff who ignores the boy's werewolf warnings. Be on the lookout as well for Susan Foster (Billy Jack) as one of the victims. The Boy Who Cried Werewolf features a couple of nods to the 1941 Universal Monsters classic, The Wolf Man, by way of a cane and by way of the commune, which is reminiscent of the gypsy caravan in that film. This Scream Factory Blu-ray may be minimal with regard to extras, but it delivers an impressive video presentation, albeit with occasional “cigarette burns” print damage.
