Nintendo Ending Wii U Production

Nintendo will reportedly cease production of Wii U consoles later this week.

Nintendo will end Wii U production this Friday, multiple sources have confirmed to Eurogamer.

At the last official count, as of 30th September, Nintendo had shipped 13.36m Wii U consoles. The Wii U's final tally will likely now be only slightly more.

For comparisons sake, GameCube sold 21m. N64 sold 32m. Wii sold 101m.

Nintendo's Japanese production line will shut down for the last time this week after the final deadline for orders passed yesterday, Eurogamer understands. Only a small number of further orders were placed.

Wii U launched back in November 2012 and quickly shifted a couple of million units, although sales have been steady to slow ever since.

I have never regret buying the Wii U, still have alot of fun with it.

Bayonetta 2 alone is worth owning a Wii U for IMO.

I only bought three games for my Wii U: Bayonetta 1 & 2; Fatal Frame V; and Mario Kart.

Those games are all good, but the system really could have used more support.

I enjoyed the Wii U while I had it but...

No true 3D Mario
No Metroid
4 years and still no new Zelda

Not having these 3 franchises on the console was inexcusable IMO.

2D was cool at launch at 1080p but yeah they needed a much bigger 3D game similar to N64.

Those heavy hitters you mentioned could have just saved the Wii U's life.

On Nintendo’s official Japanese site, the company has announced that production is scheduled to end soon.


The text reads, 近日生産終了予定 (kinjitsu seisan shuuryou yotei), which means, “Production is scheduled to end soon.”

Im buying one lol!! Just ordered Mario Galaxy 2 and hardcover guide and Wind Waker HD Guide too. Gonna hunt it down out the brick and mortar stores first then pick up more classic Wii games like punch out Wii etc. awesome games if u do backwards compatabilty with it and so much Wii nostalgia too!!!!!!

Just imagine if they put even a fraction of the effort that they put into the 3ds was actually used on the Wii U. HD remakes of Majoras mask and Ocarina of time, a good Pokémon game on console, an animal Crossing sequel, etc. would have been glorious.

They did remasters of Wind Waker & Twilight Princess on Wii U, I think those took a similar amount of effort as Ocarina of Time & Majora's Mask on 3DS.

Remastering Ocarina of Time & Majora's Mask on Wii U would have taken way more effort... to make them truly look HD they'd basically have to be completely new games.

I just bought a WII U . Buying games pre-owned from Music Magpie and selling them for twice as much to Cex has finally paid off. So I paid about £70 for one overall. The only game I have is Project Zero Maiden of the Blackwater and the camera mechanic is the coolest thing ever.

Back on topic...

Many people have the assumption that the WII U would drop in price at some point. I did as well, but there is barely any stock out there. When Black Friday turns up and the cheapest "deal" is £240. I think it's pretty clear that price drop will never come :/. Not to mention sites like base.com and Zavvi have no WII U console stock for sale at all.

There are many people left waiting for this price drop, so I expect prices to rise from now onwards. For new copies atleast. For pre-owned, it depends if the Switch reveal makes people buy or sell WII Us. I think it won't change, so the price will probably stay the same. Maybe increase a little, it's hard to tell.

Wish they'd drop the price. I'd like to grab another one just in case mine eventually breaks down or if not that as a collector's item. Hopefully they get down to $200 or lower when the final stock is getting cleared out.
