Default Mummy Master Thread- POST HERE ONLY

I was at my local Blockbuster last night and they had Mummy, Mummy Returns, and Scorpion King on Blu-Ray on the wall available to rent. Kinda odd with the street date being 2 weeks away. Just wondering if anyone else noticed them available?

It appears that many BB stores are ignoring street dates. Of course that doesn't include the stores around me.

That's no joke.

I went to a BB close to my house last Wednesday to see if they had Batman Begins. The clerk checked the computer and and she showed they had one in stock. She hunted all over the store for it and finally found it back behind one of the counters. We were at the cash register and she had just rang it up when one of the guys working behind the counter noticed. He then proceeded to tell her that the movie wasn't available for sale till July 8. I played "stupid" and left "disappointed."

The only Blu-Ray I ever picked up early was Unbreakable at Best Buy.

Yeah, Blockbuster isn't always on their game when it comes to street dates.

I don't go into Blockbuster very often since I really don't rent movies, and I just don't care much for the store in general.

But just shy of 2 years ago (before I had taken the plunge into Blu-Ray) my aunt received a Blockbuster gift card as some kind of award at work, and she didn't want it, so she gave it to me.

My now wife (then fiance) and I went over to a local store to see what they had for sale (either new or used) just to use the card up and get out of there.

We walked around for quite a while, largely unimpressed with the selection. Then I was in the 'S' section of their new (non-used) DVD section, and sitting there were the individual, limited edition releases of Star Wars Episodes 4-6 (the ones that included the original versions on the 2nd disc) about a week or two before they were due to come out.

I actually did a double take. I glanced, saw one of them, but didn't think much of it (I didn't focus in on specifically which release it was) but then a second or two later it hit me and I thought, "Did I just see what I think I saw?!"

So, I took a few steps back, and sure enough, it was them. They had 2 copies of all of them except for Empire (of which they only had one... perhaps someone had bought the other copy).

I looked at the prices, and I knew that if I waited until street date, I could find them cheaper elsewhere, getting a better deal overall. But, using the gift card (which was for something like $10 or $20), it brought the amount of actual money that I had to spend to around what I would have paid elsewhere, and since there wasn't really anything else there that I wanted and since I really didn't want to have to come back later to use up the card, I went for it.

I was worried that some employee would notice and say something when I went to check out, but nope! I walked out of there with them that day, and it was pretty awesome!

I was really surprised by the whole thing because Star Wars is about as high profile of a release as it gets that you really would want to be careful about breaking street date with.

That's interesting... I used to work at a small, local video store and it's common policy there to have a one-day rental of movies a week before their street date. It seems like that and porn are the only ways small video stores can make it nowadays... of course, they could always try the be kind rewind approach... but I don't live in New Jersey....

I just wouldn't expect a big name store like Blockbuster to do something like that...

Walked into my local Block Buster yesterday looking for Batman Begins & the Ruins...nothing. But I did see The Mummy Returns and The Scorpion King. I looked at the dates on the movie and both read 7/22/08. I found that strange as well.

BB has always released early. I remember buying The Phantom Menace DVD there like 10 days before it hit the streets.

You always have a good chance at finding older movies available early at blockbuster. Since I knew nobody would know the Mummy movies weren't out yet, I put them out in my store. You won't find any of the new movies, but catalog releases are likely, as long as they are shipped to us early.

A no go at the Blockbuster in Orlando at Alafaya/Curry Ford. After great reviews for the first two Mummy's on High Def Digest I am sure The Scorpion King will get good marks as well. I just didn't like SK as much as the first two Mummy movies.

I bet mine has them each for 34.99 if I go and look. Really wish it was ATLEAST 30 and then maybe would I buy one just to feel that "early" feeling!

They are definitely a good source to get things early.

Some of the Blockbusters in my area seem to be okay with selling catalog titles early but won't with new releases. For example, I recently got Point Break there early but even though they had Vantage Point as well, she wouldn't sell that one to me.

Anyway, thanks for the heads up. I had thought about going by Blockbuster since review sites had started putting out the reviews (making me think copies had been sent out already) but wasn't sure they'd get them this early. Guess I'll check on my way home tonight.

I went to two Blockbuster stores today. As soon as I walked in, they had a huge cardboard display of The Mummy...I saw all SD editions and began to get nervous. I went to the Blu-ray section and saw that they had The Mummy available for rent. They did but they had none available for purchase. After the 2nd store...I gave up. Lady asked if I wanted the Sdvd version. I said umm no the blu-ray. She then said "oh we have the batman special edition" I said oh that's tempting and walked out.

They had One Flew over the Cuckoos nest but it was for $35...I'll hold off until the regular release date.

If anyone HAS The Mummy, can you post of pics of the inside artwork? I haven't seen anything but the front so far.
