I just went to take my kids to see Shrek the Third today and I couldn't help to think, "Damn! What is the deal here! Why doesn't this look like one of my blu-ray movies on my HD set!" The last movie I saw in the theatre was POTC 2 last July, ever since that time all I have done is watch movies at home and more recently on Blu-ray.

While I was sitting there watching the movie I was unimpressed. The colors were not as vibrant and the the over all PQ was not as good as I had remembered in a movie theatre. Granted this may have just been a bad quality film print, but has anyone else caught themselves comparing a movie in a theatre to one they have seen on Blu-ray, and thinking to themselves that it is not as good as what it would probably be at home when it comes out in HD?

I think because of this I didn't enjoy myself as much and couldn't really get into the movie.

I feel the same way... I watched Shooter a couple of weeks ago... really weak compared to my equipment at home...at moments it drags the attention from the story

eventhough Shooter was a cool movie with a great sound design.. It will be a cool Blu-ray release..

I know what you're talking about. It also sucks because you end up going to the most expensive theatres so the quality is comparable to your home theater. Many people don't care too much about the quality, just the creature comforts. I've got to find the best theatre around, so I end up spending more money on that end, too. It really is a bad habit for my wallet.

I figured this a while ago. Unless you need to really just get out of the house, it's better to watch it at home. Especially since I moved to JP, to watch a movie before 2200 it's almost $20 per ticket. So if your on a date or with your family you'll be emptying your wallet. I maily order from Amazon, the max $27 for one BD I aint no fool when it comes to the dollars.

I watch my movies with the ps3 through a projector on a 106" screen and a 7.1 system as the cherry topper.

Yup. I had the very same experience with Shrek the Third recently. You could tell the animation was stellar, but in that lazy, unfocused theatre presentation, you couldn't relish the details like in Blu.

When I see these lazy theatre projections, and when I witness people climbing up to the back of the stadium-seated room, I'm really not surprised when Average Joes constantly affirm that "My DVDs are good enough." They don't know any better, and are too brainwashed... err... conditioned by the TV viewing experience - i.e. squinting at a small box from across their living rooms. >_<

While the movie itself didn't compare to the first two by a long shot, I still hope DreamWorks Animation pulls their heads out of their butts and releases it to Blu-ray this Christmas. Or maybe a trilogy pack for 2008.

Point is, the Shrek films would sell phenomenally well on Blu-ray (good title for DreamWorks Animation to start with), and I for one want to see those direct digital transfers!!

Funny you say that - had a few people over last night and they were checking out our PS3. One of the things I ran thru was the trailer for the movie 300.

Almost immediately the one person said..

"Why would you go to a theatre anymore, the picture is better than it was at the theatre."

One example he gave was the scene with all the carnage piled up behind was much clearer and sharper on our setup.

Yes, I feel the same way. I have everything here that I need. I have just upgraded my Denon AVR 2803 to the Pioneer VSX AX4ASi. Damn walls of the house shake when the 1000watts of Definitive Audio sub gets a good signal. When I upgrade my Sony VPL12HT to the Sony VPLVW50 or the new Epson Pro Home Theatre projector so that I can get 1080p rather than the current 1080i on my 100 inch wall screen I may never need to leave the house again at all, never mind going to a dirty, smelly, expensive movie theatre with dozens of noisy, inconsiderate people (who I can't even not invite again) and where water costs $3.70 a bottle and I can't pause the movie when I need a pee. Cinemas are as good as dead IMHO. I certainly won't be giving them any more of my hard earned.

I agree, we went to see Spider-Man 3 the other day. And, the picture on my preview disk from Best Buy was so much better then watching in the theatre.

That said, I still plan on bringing the family to see Shrek 3 this week.

I agree with everybody. I saw Shrek 3 today in the theatre and it looked like garbage compared to my HD home setup. What a bummer.

Wow, am I glad to see I am not the only one that feels this way.

My girlfriend dragged me to the movie theatre last night to see Shrek the third. I really didn't want to go, but she was really looking forward to seeing the movie ... so what do you do right?

Anyway, as soon as the movie starts, I noticed something was not right. I couldn't quite put my finger on it, but the picture seemed slightly out of focus, the colors were washed out, and the sound .. Eh .. really wasn't all that great either. I was thinking .. "wow, I wished we'd have stayed home in front of the Plasma TV with a blu-ray movie".

Ofcourse, like that wasn't enough, some little kids somewhere in the audience started crying, and the parents wouldn't shut their kids up, nor leave the room. Thru-out the whole movie, at least 30 - 40 minutes got ruined by crying and/or talking kids.

Then there were the people that either had felt they had to stretch their legs, and/or the kids that were crashing the movie after they just finished watching the movie they were there for in the first place. In other words, people walking back and forth in front of the screen,

And when you finally think it can't get any worse, there is the annoying "movie watcher" with his laster pointer, making circles on the screen.

Of course, this "great" experience, along with the stale popcorn and flat, over syrup'd coke ... for two ... came with a price tag of about 50 bucks.

My girlfriend calls me a couch potato sometimexs, but you know what, I enjoy watching a blu-ray on my 50 inch plasma at home with my 7.1 surround sound setup.

I really try to go to the theatres as few times as possibles. If it was up to me, movies would go straight to blu-ray. I think the whole theatre expericence is way overrated, plus a 4 dollar coke and a 6-dollar bag of popcorn is ridiculous. Not even considering the 10 dollar movie ticket.

It is my believe, that unless the theatres really turn things around, they're as good as out of business. Especially with today's technology and ever cheaper prices.

I think it's so funny that everyone is reacting like this. Four of us saw Shrek 3 over the weekend and I was the only one that noticed the theater experience is lacking. I'm fine with seeing one or maybe two movies in the theater a year, but for anything else I'd much rather see it on my setup.

I don't go to the theaters any longer. Last film I saw at a theater was Mystic River. I'll take the $10 they charge and put it towards a Blu-ray disc and watch it in the comfort of my own home without 200 other people eating, sneezing, coughing, talking, and getting up to go to the restroom every 3 minutes. Hate the theater!!!

BD has definitely reduced my need to go to the theaters though spiderman 3 was pretty good on IMAX ,though i agree watching awesome PQ and SQ in my underpants without having to tell someone to shut off their phone is nice.
I have to say blu-ray membership has it`s privilages !
please take the afore mentioned underpants comment with a grain of salt ..you guys know you do it too.(this disclaimer has been brought to you by blu-ray dvd,simply the best)

Yep IMAX is it for me as well. Saw Batman Begins on it 3x.

This topic is scary. I just saw Shrek 3 and couldn't help but think how weak it looked. Also saw Spidey 3 in Imax yesterday and thought it was pretty good.

Heh actually people were saying the same thing about DVD on proper home theater setups. I think a lot of theaters just plain suck both in the audio and video department.

There's also something to be said about being in the comforts of your own home with a really good sound setup, full access to whatever snack foods you like, no noisy teenagers throwing popcorn at you and the ability to pause things to take a pee break or even just have a conversation with your friends and family watching.

lol im the same way! i went to see shrek the 3rd today as well and it looked so blurry! not that bad but nothin like bluray. def not clear
