Default sony xbr 5

Went to my local retailer to check out a 46 in Sony xbr5 tv. Has anyone else seen or have this tv. They played potc on bluray for me and the picture was great but takes some getting used to. It made the picture look fake didnt look like i was watching a movie but more like camcorder home video. Does anybody actually like this look or am I the only one that gets nauseated from the detail.

I bought a 52" XBR5 the day after Thanksgiving and I love it. I also own a KDL-46v2500 and the XBR's picture is noticeably better (blacks especially). You have to remember that most display units in stores are not properly calibrated, and even if they are they might not look how you want it. The xbr line comes with a bunch of image options so you can make the picture look just how you want it. I turned off all of those motion enhancers, noise reducers, and black correctors and the picture looks better in my opinion. Find some professional calibration settings online and try them out.

I would, however, recommend the xbr4 over the xbr5 unless you really like the piano black finish or want the extra 6 months warranty. As far as I can tell, those are the only differences and it's not really worth it. Save a few hundred dollars and put that toward more blu's or a better sound system.

That being said, I have no regrets about getting the xbr5. The bezel is stylish and the picture is brilliant. It looks great in my family room.

My sister one upped me on Black Friday and bought herself the 40 inch XBR4, which is the same exact TV as the XBR5 without the black piano finish.

More or less, I owe these guys at AVS for getting the settings right and having all the pros and none of the cons of some of this great TV's perks:

http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?k...w_BNwN--x3mCMQ

^^ Use that as your ballpark frame of reference to work off of. Set CineMotion to Auto 1 and basically shut off just about everything else, including the Motion enhancer.

What an awesome TV!

No juttering or any of that mess here!

Nice Spreadsheet. Do they have one of those for a 70" XBR2? Would love to fiddle with the 'rents set.

The 46" XBR5 is definately the TV I am buying as our second set when we move next year. I haven't seen it yet but I hear it's fantastic.

just got my sony 46" XBR4 delivered today... HOLY S**T!!!!!! is all I can mutter.. to see it on display in a store is one thing but to actually have it in house and mess with the settings is a religious experience all its own!

It looks AMAZING with my sony ps3 hooked up to it. Absolutely the best pic I have ever seen. Had some friends come over and we watched Casino Royale. "Is that in 3d?!" was something they all said.. couldn't stop raving about how great it looked.

I guess some people don't like the motion enhancer. I do for the most part. it is a little strange at first but it grew on me within the first half hour. It really does make the image look 3-d.. I'll keep playing with the settings and see what I like best, but right now no complaints at all. def worth the money I spent.

Just for your information, these are already answered in the FAQ section of the owners thread:

  • Warranty (12 months for XBR4, 18 months for XBR5)
  • Matte black bezel for XBR4, glossy black bezel for XBR5
  • RS-232C port (for home automation applications) only on XBR5
(snip)

Where can I find calibration settings?
Try this link.

Well, this is really exciting to read. I'm waiting on my 52" XBR5 at the end of this week.

I can tell you that when you look at at the XBR4/5s in the store they stand out. The aesthetics are top notch. But the picture...well, even in the store they look sharp.

I played a PS3 game on a 40 XBR4. The blur on panning around looked really good. No artifacts and instant response when you stopped.

I'm really looking forward to getting things set up. I've gone all Sony on this purchase. The TV drove it but the amps 6 HDMI along with the theatre sync sold me. I'm really done with 5 remotes and/or programming the universal remote.

However, I have to say it won't be long before I am out buying a PS3 I'm sure. It's just that the games haven't really caught me yet.

My brother-in-law just bought the 52" xbr5. He loves it. It is a nice TV! I like my elite better, but if I had a choice of a second Tv, that would probably be it.

Does the XBR4 also carry the XMB or is that XBR5 line exclusive?

I have the 52 XBR4 and my bride noticed that. she thought it looked like a local cable TV show, hahaha. I have recently turned on and off the motion enhancer and i try to make sure it is OFF when I watch TV and movies because it kinda makes me ill.

Yup. Bought the same TV on the 17th of Nov. Couldn't agree more. What a nice welcome to HD, isn't it?

I thought about the Elite. In the end a couple of things swung me toward the XBR5. Firstly, plasma runs a little hotter. I'm going to have it in a slightly enclosed space. Secondly, I'm designing the lighting conditions and can control how things are set up. Thirdly, the idea of trying a single manufacturer for the main AV components was the clincher.

I've tried to shop for separate parts in the past and always had remote/compatibility issues somewhere along the line. If Pioneer made the kind of amp I was looking for I might have gone the way of the Elite..

But I get your comment. I should imagine if I had actually seen the Elite IRL it would have been a harder choice.

AFAIK they are the same except for the bevel finish and the XBR5 has a longer warranty.

XBR4 has the exact same XMB as XBR5. The XBR5 is ugly as hell IMHO...glossy black..just what you want to show off all that dust and lint that will stick to it and show up like white on rice.

Guys, I don't want to sound repetitive but the answer has been posted before and I even copied it to the FAQ. Please see post #9 of this thread.
