The remastered 2013 release is the best for the original film. The best release of T2 is the 2015 Lionsgate release for PQ, but you also need the Skynet release if you want all three cuts of the film. For T3 the UK or DE release is the best as they are in AVC and contain lossless audio.

These are the best seperate releases so far, disregarding exclusives/limited editions:

But if you have a 3D player, go for the 3D release of genisys. Also, if you enjoy commentaries, you may want to pick up the Skynet release of T2; only problem is the PQ is inferior and the newest release contains features not on the Skynet release.

Worth noting Best Buy had an exclusive Genisys edition with a much longer documentary, if you care enough to track it down.

The Warner US release of Terminator 3 (VC-1, 13.5 mbps) is not the best. The UK Sony release (AVC, 26.8 mbps, region free) is better:

Also, as has been discussed in other threads, T1's audio is only presented in the extensive (and most would say revisionist) 5.1 remix on Blu-ray. The original mono was on the Image DVD and on the MGM SE DVD (though there were some slight variations between the two).

T2's original audio is hard to come by as well, as most Blu-rays feature the ca. 2000 6.1 remix or some variation of it (though it's arguably not nearly as revisionist as the T1 remix). The original 5.1 and stereo soundtracks appear to have been on the old Live DVD, and the original stereo seems to be included on the Japanese Blu-ray from Geneon.

Hope that helps!

I think the Optimum UK BD uses the orignal 5.1 audio, truth be told though I greatly prefer the 6.1 remix used in most DVD and BD releases from 2000 onward to both the old 5.1 and the 2.0 tracks.

T1: 2013 remaster or 2015 re-release with red case (below).
T2: 2015 "Van Ling" edition
T3: Sony UK release (region-free w/ lossless audio)
Salvation: US release
Genisys: Best Buy exclusive release (has additional BD w/ ~90min of bonus features)

And you just answered my question on whether the new red case was any different than the 2013 release.

Why do most series like Die Hard, Mission Impossible, Alien, heck even Underworld have disc sets but none seem to exist for Terminator and you have to buy each movie separately. Is it because different studios hold the rights to each movie?

Short answer: Because most of the Terminator Films are owned by different distributors. whereas the film series you mention are not.

Long answer: It does have one (linked to above) but I wouldn't buy that. I skips Terminator: Genisys, has the old ugly master of The Terminator, and the slightly inferior encode of T2. Plus, if you pick your spots, you can get the superior individual releases for the same or less than the set.

Yep.

It was a miracle that Chucky eventually got a complete series release on Blu, since MGM owns the first film and the rest are Universal.

With Terminator... the first three films alone are owned or released by (IIRC) MGM, Lionsgate, and WB.

I'd also go with the television series "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles". It only lasted 2 seasons (Gee, THANKS FOX!!! ), but the writing was brilliant, the special effects were decent. Blu-ray releases are available.
