Default TX-SR705 Firmware update, Please help.

Ok guys, I've spent a total of six hours trying to do the DSP firmware update on my TX-SR 705. I've burned the disc to a Sony CD-R with NERO. I reconfigured my PS3 to output optical changed the settings to 44.1 instead of 48hz. Plugged it into the optical 1 on my receiver and changed it's settings for Game/TV to opt 1. It just keeps reading SPDIF/UPDATING..... I just got off the phone with ONKYO and they're going to send me the firmware disc just in case I burnt it wrong. Can someone on this forum please walk me through all the steps need to be taken on the PS3 set-up. So, when I get my disc I can try again before I make the two and a half hour drive to the nearest service center. Thanks you guys are awesome.

Here I dug it out:

Bitmaping: off
Sound Settings:
Audio Output Settings:Linear PCM 2 ch 44.1khz and 48khz checked

You can change them back to what you had before after you complete the DSP update
Is there one for the 605? I just assumed mine was covered since I got it not too long from when this was all occurring but where would I check?

Thanks guys, I posted in the AVS forum and got no help. I've gotten more responses from this forum than any other. I talked to a rep at ONKYO and he said I should have the disc by Sat. I'm gonna give it one more shot before I drive all the way up to Baltimore and pay $25 at the service center. Even though I've only got a PS3 I want to have the firmware done because those Pioneer players are looking mighty nice and I never know if in a year or two I might want to buy one to Bitstream these wonderful lossless codecs.

On your 605.
Switch on the receiver. Wait for 10 seconds. Then press and hold the “DISPLAY” button and while
holding it press the “STANDBY/ON” button. This will show in the display the main firmware versions
within the unit.Within 3 seconds, press the Tone “ +“ button twice. Now display is showing the DSP firmware
version and yours should read DSP 08214A
Good luck.

Here is the file if you need it click on free. http://rapidshare.de/files/40263668/...mware.zip.html

and heres some useful info. http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1016297

Awesome. I'll check it tonight. Thanks for the info!

I'm in the same boat as you- I have the PS3, but I may change over to a standalone eventually and want to be covered.

Curious as to what firmware version you are running currently?? Also if you are running a DSP/firmware version that is greater than the one affected by the DTS bomb for bitstream mode, is it really worth it?? Lastly after you complete the firmware upgrade, could you please confirm what this latest version is? Thanks

man, this is really aggravating me. I just got the Firmware disc from Onkyo and set my PS3 up for optical and all the other settings. Still nothing happens just keeps displaying "SPDIF/updating..". I really hate to drive two and a half hours to a service center and pay twenty five dollars.

my firmware currently reads DSPS 8051:07601A and I need 08214A the other three DSPs are correct. I'm beginning to think that when I upgrade my Blu-ray player to a standalone. I might just upgrade my receiver too. I'm going to pick up a cheap CD player and if that doesn't work I'm giving up. I've logged in enough hours going over and over settings and trying to do this update.

If you have a standalone blu-ray player and you want to bitstream the DTS-HD MA codec to your 605. On certain movies a loud shotgun sound goes through all your speakers and could damage them. The firmware updates the DSP so the DTS "bomb" never happens. It's a glitch and it really annoys me that I spent so much on my receiver and I have to worry about something like that happening.

It was a breeze when i updated mine. I downloaded the file from onkyo and it came with instructions. Make sure you burn the CD in wav format not data. I have heard of some devices with optical outs dont work properly since they modify the outgoing signal. I used a 7 year old sony DVD player. Hope this helps

check this out:Onkyo 705 instructions

If that doesn't work try downloading the update straight from Onkyo. Its a one time download so make sure you save it correctly. http://63.148.251.142/download/firmw...re_replace.cfm

It would also be good to read up on the AVS 705 thread. It has a great FAQ. The Official Onkyo TX-SR705 Thread (FAQ in 1st Post) Check out 14)a of the owner section for the firmware upgrade.

TVs shouldn't need firmware updates... I wish manufacturers could get something right the first time!

I have the actual disc from Onkyo that the service centers use. I tried my PS3, Xbox360 and a old Pioneer DVD player and it never goes into "writing" it just stays on "S/PDIF UPDATING..". I think I'm done and have to except the fact that if I ever get a standalone player down the road I'll just have to decode DTS-HD MA internally in the player. But, by the time players surpass the PS3 and come down in price I'll probably be picking up a better A/V receiver.

Update: I called Onkyo again and they told me I could take it to a service center since I'm still in the window for the one year warranty. Only problem is the service center is two and a half hours away and I can only drop it off since all warranty jobs take up to seven days. Yeah I'll pass, too much in gas and too much driving along with a week without my reciever. I wish I would have waited a little longer to jump on a receiver able to decode HD codecs.

I updated mine a couple months back and it was 1 big pain in the a$$. The main thing I remember about it was it took 3 trys to burn the disc properly.

I know this is an old thread, but just an update on those who might be looking up this info in the future, as I did. I just bought the sr705 to run my other room. Read about the firmware upgrade problem, went on Onkyo website to register product and downloaded the firmware. Burned the .wav on a cd and tried to play it through my old PS2 which was hooked up to the Onkyo, wouldn't work as stated above with the same issues. I went and got my Sony S360 bluray player and hooked it up to the sr705, played the disc and the firmware loaded up exactly as stated in the instructions.

So the point is... as mentioned in the instructions. The firmware update MAY NOT work with some players, in this case your PS3, Xbox, PS2... unfortunately the other bad news is knowing and trying to get a player that is compatible, luckily the Sony S360 worked for me. Hope this helps.

Smile Finally, Success!

I have finally got the firmware to upgrade.

Nero finally burnt the cd file correctly.
I used an old Sony BDP-S550 blu ray player to play the wav file.
I used fiber optic and set game for optic 1 on the receiver.

I had to burn 6 CD's to finally get one to work. You will hear 3 tones in the 1 minute 4 seconds of updating.

Hopefully no more Sonic Booms in the DTS Master Audio. Although it hardly ever happened.
