Are these recent price drops a "fire sale" and a sign of desperation by the BDA in the standalone category?
I mean, players that were very recently around $600, can now be had for under $299. It seems as though they are trying to offload these profile 1.0 players ASAP as 1.1+ players will supposedly soon appear, thus relegating these BD players to collect dust. I personally picked up a Sammy 1400 as it hit that pricepoint sweetspot, and am contemplating picking a second one up for the bedroom, as they have played back everything I throw at them (with judicious firmware updates), including Fox titles. Toshiba's can be considered a firesale because at the time they cut the price by 66% (from $300 to $100) The bluray price cuts are 25% tops. Also those Toshiba units came with a zillion free movies. Its likely a combination of selling 1.0 players, pressure from Toshibas low prices, and general price cuts for the holiday season. Nothing remotely like a firesale. |

I think it's safe to say at this point that yes, it is a fire sale. And you're partially right in that it's to make way for the new 1.1 profile players. This is something that we've all seen coming for months now, and really is no surprise. But to say it's out of desperation is a bit off-the-mark.
This is a true benefit to those that have been waiting for a sub-$300 BD player, especially if you don't care about the new-fangled bells and whistles like PIP and internet connectivity for your movies. It's also a great opportunity for many of us to make them Christmas presents, or to have another player in the house. This is a win-win for Blu-ray enthusiasts. |

It was a way for consumers to get the best high definition format at an introductory price. Advances occur all the time in technology and I am sure when we look 4 years from now at our current players we will think they are clunkers. But that happens to anything you buy. You can never have the best for to long before it's outdated.

I am trying to decide if I should get another 1400, or wait for a post 1.0 player for the bedroom, but dont plan on spending $1000 on a BD player amd have no desire for a clunky game console in my bedroom. I'll probably just pick up another 1400 and be done with it for a year or so. I can already take advantage of the advanced interactivity on my HD-DVD player and it is unbelievable that the BDA missed the mark and is having to play catch up all the time. Go figure.
You gotta love competition though. Is there a release list of 1.0/2.0 titles? |

It's not a "firesale". It's a combination of countering the Toshiba prices, and generating larger hardware sales as guaranteed by the lower price points as well as taking advantage of the Christmas buying season.
This was predicted awhile ago by Sony who said that there would be players in the $300 range by the end of the year. |

This is normal, prices go down at this time of year, look at tv's & cars. The New models will start to coming out in 3 months & those will have a cheaper/lower MSRP then players the same time the previous year. Not new. |

I'm enjoying the lower prices on some players. My brother and my nephew have been talking about buying a Blu ray player after the holidays, so I decided now would be a good time to buy them both one for Christmas. Picked up two of the Sony S300 player for $299 each plus tax and shipping, and they'll be under their trees this year for Christmas.

If you have too many BD players, I'll take a couple off your hands.
I'll PM you my mailing address. I'll take, 1 PS3, 2 Samsung 1400's, 1 Pansonic, and 1 Pioneer. Thank you Santa. Quote:

Are you a native english speaker? It does not appear so, as your sentences are incomprehensible. "...well get yourself a lap then, us for me,..." is not a complete statement, nor is "I can't find Clunky in my ps3"
Stop looking only through your Blu glasses. Both formats have strengths and weaknesses, to claim otherwise shows ignorance. I actually am keeping both my Blu and Red hardware as I paid for them and they both serve a function, its just the red titles have functioned seeamlessly, while BD title playability is actually deteriorating/getting worse with time, not better. This is a troubling trend. Well, I'm gonna watch The Simpsons tonight (on Blu). The previews looked good on die Hard 4, and I didnt go see it in the theaters. Or should I watch Blade Runner (On Red)? No-I've seen BR and it can wait for the weekend. Quote:

As we all make this mistake, the $100 DUD's are not the same as the new sub $300 BD players. Never were and never will be. The new pricing matches the pricing for the 1080p DUD players out there.

1080p is a marketing gimmick-you know that dont you?
That is why you will NEVER see a side by side comparison of 1080i/1080p in any store, ever using identical HDTV's and identical players with 1080p/24 content. |

then go get a $99 player, try to find a native 1080i tv & go away, because you don't know want your taking about. cnet: '3. Why is 1080p theoretically better than 1080i? 1080i, the former king of the HDTV hill, actually boasts an identical 1,920x1,080 resolution but conveys the images in an interlaced format (the i in 1080i). In a tube-based television, otherwise known as a CRT, 1080i sources get "painted" on the screen sequentially: the odd-numbered lines of resolution appear on your screen first, followed by the even-numbered lines--all within 1/30 of a second. Progressive-scan formats such as 480p, 720p, and 1080p convey all of the lines of resolution sequentially in a single pass, which makes for a smoother, cleaner image, especially with sports and other motion-intensive content. Actually the difference is there, YOU just can't see it. Just like some folks can't tell the difference between a DD 5.1 and a PCM 5.1 track.
I have a 1080i max TV so I'm not talking out of my ass here. I have seen scenes with a lot of motion in them look a little smoother. That slight jump in quality didn't justify the extra $500 for the same size TV so I didn't buy it. Doesn't mean it wasn't there. Not that there's anything wrong with that. To each his/her own. |

Oh my cylon-Do you understand how 1080p/24 content can be sent through a 1080i transport and every bit of the progressive frame is present at the display, just as if it had been sent as progressive in the first place? Go do some reseearch.
