I know I've asked about this before, but could both MGM and Warner Bros. collaborate on an MGM 100th anniversary celebration in 2024 and include the best known films from the pre-1986 MGM library (just like the 85th anniversary collaboration in late 2009), or is MGM just going to celebrate their centennial themselves by using their hodge-podge library (like they did with their 90th anniversary nearly a decade ago) built up in the past by Kirk Kerkorian and Giancarlo Parretti, including United Artists, Orion, Cannon, PolyGram and a bunch of other independent and low budget film libraries?
I heard that the only current plan for an MGM centennial so far was from WB's George Feltenstein, who brought it up on a podcast he guest starred in last year since WB owns the pre-1986 MGM library. Last edited by Filmfanatic10; 12-11-2023 at 07:45 AM. |

Here's another suggestion for MGM's centennial: I think Amazon/MGM should also bring back United Artists, maybe on the latter's 105th anniversary on February 5th, after the Amazon acquisition put that label back into dormancy last year.

To answer your question, I imagine Warner and MGM will be collaborating together for the occasion. Maybe some new sets and a big 100th anniversary set containing films from the pre and post-86 libraries, United Artists, Orion, and some StudioCanal titles.

John Ford’s Arrowsmith, a 1931 MGM release has been restored and has been playing at the MoMA. It includes 10 minutes of footage that supposedly hasn’t been seen since 1931. This would seem to be a lead pipe cinch to become either a Warner Archives or Criterion release.

Maybe we can finally see some films get their first Blu Ray releases ever like The Fish that Saved Pittsburgh and Fluke although I think Kino Lorber might release those films on Blu Ray themselves they do have a good relationship with MGM after all.

I heard MGM's current distribution deal in general is with Warner Bros., although it pretty much covers new films and TV show episodes while it also has very little catalog titles, unless it's repackaged reissues of Fox-era and Sony-era releases.

Honestly that’s why I think Kino Lorber would be more fitting to release these films on Blu Ray as they care more about these neglected titles than MGM does sadly. Although MGM has been releasing a number of films that either one never been on DVD or heck even VHS or have been stuck on DVD for too long going on Blu Ray for the first time ever. Or they re release a title on Blu Ray for like the third time example being Strange Invaders gosh this film has so many Blu Rays. So who knows maybe they might finally release these films on Blu Ray but I highly doubt that will happen.

Just a suggestion, but WB should release Gone with the Wind, Ben-Hur, and North by Northwest in 4K this year!

Perhaps someone (MGM? Amazon? Sony?) might use this opportunity to finally release the pre-2006 Bonds in 4K?
(Wishful thinking, I know. I've been saying this every year since 2016...) |

So tomorrow is United Artists' 105th anniversary, but would Amazon/MGM be able to revive that brand to coincide with that anniversary, maybe by bringing United Artists Releasing back as a new form of their theatrical distribution apparatus, or rather as one of the labels of their studios?

When will an official trailer for this centennial come out? I'm expecting clips from not only (Amazon) MGM's library, but also WB's pre-1986 MGM library.
There was a trailer celebrating the studio's anniversary on MGM and MGM+'s Facebook pages, but it just has clips from their hodge podge library and third-party movies MGM+ has streaming rights to. |

I would DIE if WB finally drank enough liquid courage to release the 1949-1958 Tom and Jerry cartoons they’ve been withholding from Blu Ray.
