Default Sorting question

So, for those of you who sort your collections alphabetically, how do you handle titles that start with "The"? Do you just ignore it and go by the next word in the title? Or do you put it with the "T" stuff?

i do it with the T section because the is a word in my opinion unless something happened to it and its not no longer a word. like for instance sh*t out of luck is spelled sol well for me i spell it as sool even if it does sound kind of funny but to me of is also considered a word

It is common practice to NOT alphabetize books or movies that begin with the word "THE" under "T." It just doesn't make sense at all. However, to each his own.

The Mist would be filed under "M" for Mist.
The Ten Commandments would be filed under "T", not for the word "THE," but for the word "TEN."

Get it?

I always use "the" under the T letter, even if it makes sorting them a little complex sometimes (many movies with "the")

It would appear that I also ignore "The," like the conventional way, but I was just curious how others do it, since I only have one title like that right now (The Rock) and will get my second tomorrow (The 6th Day). So I guess this leads me to my next question: Do you put numbers before or after letters?

You definitely should disregard articles when alphabetizing.

WRT numbers in the titles, I personally prefer to consider them as if spelled out, but that's not set in stone. For example, the movie listing on this very site sorts them as numbers (ie before all titles beginning with an actual a-z letter).

i do have to agree with you on that because a number is not a word so numbers go first e.g.
3:10 to Yuma
300
Batman Begins

You guys just brought up another interesting point regarding numbers, actually. Do you go by first digit or numerical value (for example, does "50 First Dates" come first or "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea"?)? I can see from MOONPHASE's example that he considers the order symbol -> number -> letter.

I don't really have them sorted other then grouped by music and non music. I probably have about 30 or so BDs now.

When I first came to Singapore it messed me up a bit as they sort sections a bit different. I will have to go check, but I wouldn't be surprised if "The Who" is under T instead of W. When it comes to solo, it is sorted by first name. So you will find David Glimour under D and not G...

My point is, alphabetizing albums by artist's last name (which is the officially correct way) requires that both the retail people and the customers know which artists are solo and which are bands.

If an ignorant assistant gets the blanket instruction to sort by last name, he might end up putting the Pink Floyd albums in the F aisle.

I ignore articles when alphabetizing my films. Blockbuster does it that way too.

Also, my numbers go before "A" in order of the number. BUT, that's only if the title is an actual number (e.g. 10,000 BC... not Ten Commandments, The).

So many rules....
