Italy Youth (Paolo Sorrentino)

Medusa will release Paolo Sorrentino's Youth (2015), starring Michael Caine and Harvey Keitel, on Blu-ray in Italy at a later date. The film opened in Italian cinemas last month.

The film was picked up for distribution in the United States by Fox Searchlight, while StudioCanal will handle the film in the United Kingdom.

I am really looking forward to it, Sean.

It should be another tremendous film. The trailer is gorgeous.

Yes, the trailer is stunning, and I can't wait to see it. If Fox don't announce a release by the time this comes out, I may have to import this BD.

I will be importing this one for certain!
P.S. Hi Pro-B! It's been a while.

Hey Ted

How have you been? I used to see you posting from time to time, but not in recent months.

I hope all is well with you and your family.

I've been doing well. I've been involved in some other projects, so my home video buys have been fewer and farther between. Mostly renting with the occasional foreign film buy. I check in here still, but my posting has been minimal. Hope everything is well with you and yours!

Is this being released in it's original version or the dubbed version that was screened in Italy? Amazon has it listed as Italian.

Unfortunately, I don't know, but I would assume that, if anything, the source is only Italian-friendly, probably with localized texts (e.g. place names), so it's highly unlikely that there would be any English subtitles for the foreign-language portions of the film.

My hope is that 20th Century Fox will release a BD in the USA, but if that doesn't happen, then I will be importing this, or a UK or Australian release.

Can anyone confirm whether this is the case or not? Would be nice to know as I'm guessing US/UK releases are still a bit away.

There is a scan out there which purports to be of this disc, claiming it does have three Italian subtitle tracks, one of which may be used to translate English texts burned into the film. But, this scan, if it is correct, shows that the 124-minute feature is only about 25 GB in size, with only a 19.67 Mbps video bitrate. It does claim there is a 24-bit DTS-HD MA 5.1 track in English, but apparently, this film was mixed in Dolby Atmos (a first for an Italian film), so I might wait to see what StudioCanal do with it in the UK, as they have recently started doing Atmos tracks. Fox could even give use one, or possibly DTS-HD MA 7.1, which would be nice enough.

So, I'm sure the Italian BD may be adequate, but if you can hold out, I would wait for a US or UK release. The US cinema release is 4 December 2015, while the UK cinema release is 29 January 2016, so the Blu-ray announcements should hopefully not be too far behind, especially if the film becomes an awards favorite.

Pathe are releasing 'Youth' in France in January with English or French audio tracks, and French subtitles (which may or may not be forced on the English audio track).

I just watched this Italian Import by Warner Bros. and can confirm it has an english soundtrack with optional Italian subtitles, which are not embedded. Also a nice surprise is that the extras have english subtitles (at least for the interview with Paolo Sorrentino). I'm very satisfied with this Region B import. Now the quality of the film's subject and themes is another matter. Not as good as THE GREAT BEAUTY. I'd give a 5 out of ten as a rating. There is very little Italian dialogue in the film and the one or two lines are translated into English.
