Default Psycho (1998)

Ok, I know this one was a poor attempt at a remake of a classic, but with all the interest surrounding a certain motel with a current TV show and Universal releasing on DVD the original Bates Motel TV movie from 1987 (with Bud Cort and Jason Bateman), for the completest, why isn't Psycho 1998 out on blu yet?

Not really a wish but for completeness sake.

I'm sort of surprised this hasn't hit blu-ray too. It's not a "good" film but I actually enjoy it. It doesn't even come close to the original but it's an interesting misfire. I would buy it.

Because other than the poster before me, no one would buy it. Plus, I think all involved are just trying to forget it ever existed.

IMHO Psycho '98 isn't that bad. A while back, I did a re-watch of the orignal 1960 film & the '98 version, and it's interesting to note the parallels between the two. In the '98 version, J. Moore's performance (she played the sister) was unintentionally amusing; I remember she was wearing headphones in her first scene, and looked kind of like a H.S. student (though she was obviously a lot older)...

I don't think Vince V. holds a candle to A. Perkins in the original - however, if you read the original Psycho novel by R. Bloch from the 1950's, N. Bates' physical appearance is more like V. Vaughan than A. Perkins....

Psycho (1998) was a hot mess, and terribly acted! If the director was going to remake Psycho exactly like the original (scene for scene), then he should've left the movie alone, if he wasn't going to add any creativity of his own to the film. What's the use of remaking a movie, if it's going to be identical to the original? Gus Van Sant intentionally plagiarized an Alfred Hitchcock's classic! Since the remake was blatantly copied, Gus Van Sant was not the directer. Alfred Hitchcock is rolling over in his grave.

An interesting movie experiment.
I like the modern setting and color.
I was surprised the opening titles were green instead of red.
The murder scenes have a few subtle differences.
I'd buy this on Blu.

If you have a multi region player, Psycho (1998) has been released on blu-ray in Italy. It's a typical Universal transfer but it is a step up from the DVD.

This is a translated customer review from Amazon.it

Unfortunately if you select the original English audio track you'll note after about a half hour the two audio tracks overlap. The original mix of each scene overlaps another -the music comes in advance by several minutes. Example: the scene where Marion counts the money she stole starts out correct, but suddenly bursts into the music from the shower scene.
I've already reported the problem to Amazon, I'm also contacting: Pulp Video for clarification of the issue and possible replacement discs .
This release is still pretty new, so this is the only mention of the issue I've seen, but still, until more info comes in I think it's safe to say: beware all who enter here.

How strange, maybe that's why amazon.it doesn't have any in stock. They may have put an order in for a new batch.

Received my copy today and the PQ is nowhere near as bad as I expected. Looks slightly above average. I would give it a 3/5 , maybe 3.5.
The English audio track is so unbelievably awful. There's an error with the English portion. The music cues are completely screwed up. The start early, the overlap. There's music missing too. It's just completely screwed up. I've emailed amazon.it and have asked that they get back to me with an answer. It's very disappointing and I hope it can be fixed since the visual presentation is worth the price I paid.

Let's put it this way, any time there's a murder or a scene of suspense the music starts early, then repeats when it's supposed to be heard. So, right before Anne Heche gets into the shower, the classic violin cue happens BEFORE the murder. It's ridiculous. They're sending another copy and fingers are crossed. Would have been a solid release otherwise.

This was one of the weirdest theater experiences of my life. It was back when I went to the movies pretty much every Friday, and I didn't know it was a shot-for-shot remake until the movie started. I was so baffled about what I was seeing.

It was not a remake, it was always an amazingly ballsy experiment

It was 100% a remake. They took the original script and remade it. Period.

It would've been ballsy had they deviated form the original story after the shower scene and had Marion live — hence throwing the audience a huge twist just like Hitchcock did by killing her in 1960. What Van Sant did was the complete opposite of ballsy, and amazing had nothing to do with it. Embarrassing, maybe.
