Bright Star (Jane Campion)

According to an e-mail I received from Roadshow Entertainment this afternoon, Jane Campion's Bright Star is tentatively scheduled for a June 2010 release in Australia, but be advised that this may change.

PLEASE NOTE: The US release was announced and promptly retracted by Sony (see Blu-ray.com, November 17, 2009) , and that the UK release previously scheduled for 8 March 2010 has been postponed indefinitely by 20th Century Fox.

EDIT (5th February 2010): Despite the information below, EzyDVD.com.au has put up a pre-order that shows a release date of 29 April 2010, a date originally posted by majestic1 in the Australian releases thread.

The contents of the e-mail I received from Roadshow on 3 February 2010:

We currently have Bright Star releasing in June and the release will include BluRay. However, details are not confirmed and may change.

Hey majestic1, hope you don't think I tried to one-up your release list (I meant to post in your releases thread, but I had to run this morning), it's just that that DVDCrave link seems really tentative (I couldn't even complete a pre-order), so I e-mailed Roadshow to make sure the info was genuine, and that is the verbatim response, but I used the numerical date (29/04/2010), so maybe there was an error on "Carmel Bennett's" part?

I would obviously love April as opposed to June, and I think I'll try a pre-order from EzyDVD. Thanks for posting the link!

Thank you very much for this piece of great news, but I am not going to get my hopes up. I've had them put through the wringer twice already with the cancellations of the US and UK releases. But I hope so much that this gets a Blu-ray release.

Edit - Has anyone used this website before to import Blu-rays? How long does it take to get the product and how bad is the shipping charge?

I never have, but I pre-ordered this as supposedly we save on shipping by pre-ordering. However, my pre-order disappeared from my orders list and I don't know why. I will post when I hear back from EzyDVD.

Heard back from EzyDVD just now.

It seems as if it was my error and that I have two accounts with them (I must have created a duplicate by accident); when I logged in to the account the order was under--et voilà!

The pre-order should look like this in your orders list once you register an account and submit a payment option (I removed my order number):

In the interest of full disclosure, I wanted to let other importers know I have cancelled my order due to financial constraints and also due to having many more titles on order between now and May 2010. I did manage to see Bright Star via Sony's R1 DVD (rented from Blockbuster) and while I appreciated the film and still stromgly disagree with Sony's decision to pull the US BD release, I do not feel that this is a title I will need to re-visit in the foreseeable future.

I will however keep an eye out for any changes with this release, and be sure to update the thread should no one do so before me.

Also, in the interim, note that the film has been announced by Fox Pathé Europa for release in France on 19 May (see this thread) though forced subtitles may be an issue.

Anybody seen this anywhere yet? Saw it for $39.99 at JB, but don't wanna pay that much. Hoping it has been spotted elsewhere for less...

I called BigW and the guy said they don't have it on Blu, DVD only. He said they won't be getting it in on Blu, and this is becoming a trend with BigW. Didn't like hearing that news...

Ridiculous - why would a film by Jane Campion be so difficult to find in Australia - being a Kiwi born Aussie!?

Second this... this is not a blockbuster movie so I doubt that they will sell much of it at $40.. $30 seems a more reasonable price for it

On another note, just curious if any Australian/Kiwi has actually bought the title? The backcover has a B logo so it seems to be Region B locked?
