Jane Campion's Bright Star (2009) has received a preliminary release date: March 8. Nominated for Palme d'Or at this year's Cannes Film Festival.

Bright Star is an absolutely fantastic film, and I cannot wait to get this on Blu-ray. This is excellent news.

It's a shame there's no outcry that this film, among the better reviews of the year (85% on Rotten Tomatoes, 81 on Metacritic, 7.7 rating on IMDb) isn't getting released on Blu-ray; not in North America and not in the UK (and probably not anywhere else either). It has even been praised for it's cinematography and general beauty, the type of film that just begs to be released in high definition.

I haven't even seen it, my hope was to be able to rent it on Blu-ray but if it's only coming out in SD I guess I won't be seeing it at all any time soon.

Didn't you read the original post!? According to that, it will be released on Blu on 8th March.

DVD is scheduled for March 8th but no Blu-ray, unfortunately.

Hello,

At the time when I opened up this thread, the film was still listed as upcoming in the UK retailer system. I would send an email tomorrow to confirm whether or not it has been officially canceled - but more than likely I won't be able to update the thread probably until after January 6th.

Keep up updated once you find out please. It's going to be really frustrating if this release is also canceled.

Amazon.co.uk only has the DVD listed, play.com only has the DVD available for pre-order (they list the Blu-ray, but there's no button to add it to the cart, calling it unavailable), and the U.S. Blu-ray release was cancelled as well.

Even odder is that Sony is distributing it on DVD in the U.S., while apparently 20th Century Fox is distributing the DVD in the UK. Why would two separate distributors NOT release it on Blu-ray? Did the producers of the film put something in the distribution contracts that only allow Sony/Fox to release it on SD DVD?

I already wanted to see it last wednesday but I was too tired so I went to the earliest screening today and "WOW!". Hands down, the best film in 2009! It really needs a Blu-ray release.

Bump. I'm ashamed to say I just learned that this film is about the Keats/Brawne romance and now I'm desperate to see it, but I'd greatly prefer a 1080p viewing.

Is the UK release gone for good or just postponed?

Also just FYI, according to this thread in the Australia sub-forum, Bright Star is listed for a 29 April release in Australia. I wonder, is this release also in jeopardy?

I e-mailed Sony the following: I am still shocked that there hasn't been a Blu Ray release for Jane Campion's Bright Star.
