Default Isn't PS3 inconvenient to use?

I'm not a gamer but thinking of getting a PS3 as a blu-ray player because it seems like very future-proof and its loading time is good. One thing that makes me hesitate is its look. I mean it doesn't have a disply panel (right?), without which it will be inconvenient to use as a BD player. How do you know which chapter or track you are in, for example? I noticed also that there are not buttons like play, pause, FF, RW, etc. You have to use the controller evey time? I don't know... You guys try to pursuade me.

You can buy the PS3 blu-ray remote with the "play, reverse, forward, skip, etc..."

The chapters, and tracks can be displayed on the TV without stoping the movie.

i own 3 video games. period. i bought the ps3 for blu rays and its now the center of my home theater. super audio cd player, blu ray player, tons of songs stored on it, tons of pictures stored on it. it is quite possibly the best home theater piece i have ever seen. much less owned. i can't wait for a us version of the playtv function available in europe.

I bought my PS3 mainly for movies and I don't think it's inconvenient to use at all.Even if you didn't have a remote for it the controllers are wireless anyway

Press the "select" button on the PS3 controller and you will get all of the info that a display panel will give you and then much more info! YES, IT'S TRUE! Who needs a display panel on the unit when the TV itself can give you twice the info without all kinds of glowing distractions to take away from your film experience?

As for controls, they are easy to figure out if you take 2 minutes to read about them. Seriously! "Start" to pause/resume, top trigger buttons to "FF" or "Skip" (back and forth). That's about all there is to it. What else do you need to know for controls? Oh yeah, the square button brings up your Blu-ray playback menu... which is a new feature with Blu-ray that you wouldn't have used on DVD anyways. Or, you can press the triangle and get an on-screen menu that will let you select commands based on the symbols that you've used for years. It aggrivates me when people complain about the controller as something that is "difficult to learn about" when it should take less than 2 minutes!!! After all, I learned it all in about 10 seconds.

Default If you're watching the display on the player........

then your priorities are out of whack.

The remote will take care of any "control" problems and the on screen display is far superior to reading it off the screen of a player.

The PS3 (w/BD Remote) is better to watch movies with than any DVD player I've ever owned.

i bought the PS3 mainly for games. and i use it... mainly for games.
But still, i buy lots of movies. i used to use the controller... and honestly, its simple to use.

I bought myself a BD remote simply cause it was 29.99. Why not? Its blue-tooth!

Anyway. i still use the controller for playback of videos running off the HDD, simply cause i can never bother reaching my WHOLE ARM over to the table to grab the remote. Too much exersize, you know?

yeah. point is- controller works fine. but if you hate it THAT much, just go buy the remote... not like they're expensive. :/

It's actually quite convenient to use as a Blu Ray player, even using the controller. I actually find it easier using the controller than a remote. Also when watching DVDs its got a pretty good upscaler too. Oh and it plays games too :P

Get the PS3, you won't regret it.

It is the best video player I've ever owned. It may take a day or two to get used to but it is in no way inconvenient. I highly suggest buying the BD remote.

I do wish the bluetooth remote for it was backlit, but that is about it.

Right now I just use the light from my Harmony's display to see the buttons in the dark.

ps3 is the greatest player/gaming system i've seen so far.. with the amount of features it has: the fact that it's easily updated, you can upgrade the harddrive to store more stuff (i.e. music and photo like buck said) making it the all you need piece of hardware for your home theater

I press the select button all the time when a movie is on it shows all the information that you stated in your post. So the answer is press the select button using the controller.
