Question need advice on good up convert

Wanted some input on the best valued up convert dvd player for the bedroom to go w/my new flat panel 1080i?? No need for the fancy periphals. Won't have surround sound hooked up. Let me know if there's a real cheap BD player that's cheap(around 150)

Well all BD players will play DVDs, and I think they all up-convert.
As for a stand alone up-converter box, you will want to get something that costs at least $100. Try a Sharp or Sony or Panasonic.

You could buy a $99 HD-DVD player. I hear they do a good job at upconverting and since Toshiba is losing money on every box, you're hurting them, in a way. Just commit to never buying any Red media and you're actually helping Blu while buying something from Red... I think.

The cheapest Blu player out there is still higher than your $150.

Any vets here have a different take on this?

Sony DVPNS75H Single Disc Upscaling DVD Player
with HDMI out.

$69.00 on Amazon

Works great, I have had one for about 6-7 months now.
However it's collecting dust now that I got the Stand alone player.

I've heard good things about Oppo, but I own the Sony -75H and never had any problems with it, bought it after much research.

If you really want Blu, the cheapest I"ve seen is $220 for a Samsung BD-P1000 (which I believe DOES upconvert? Or am I wrong there?) refurb. Might get it cheaper used on ebay, but I doubt with shipping you'll get it under $150.

Now in about three months when we have Funai, Daewoo, etc producing players, prices will likely be lower, especially for used players...

Now this, THIS IS A CROCK. "Upconverting" is a scam used to sell defunct technology to people with HDTV's. I tried several before going Blu and at most I saw slighty brighter colors. Banding and compression artifacts will always be prominent when you play DVD's on HD. Who wants to see that crap. Save your friggin' money or go Blu again.

It is a crock... what happens when you want to watch a Blu-ray on that HDTV of yours??? Get a Samsung or Sony player, they are on sale for less than $300, you will regret it if you get a mere "upconverting" player.

I'll have to agree here. Upconverting does make regular DVD look better on your HDTV, but why spend the money on a player if you have intentions of going Blu someday? A Blu-Ray player will upconvert your standard DVD collection AND you will get the real hi-def experience.

If you don't have the money right now, save up. Besides, I'm sure there will be announcements at CES for new generation players that will be better and cheaper.

I already have a PS3 +HD tv in the family room. Just want something for the bedroom, if I feel lazy and just want to watch a movie in bed, ya know? I would love it to be a BD or HD dvd player but, if I can find a solid up converter for cheap I just might get it instead. I do the majority of movie watching in the fam room but, I usually watch tv as I fall to sleep.

but why would you do that? Think of all the blus that you have in the family room that you couldnt watch in the bedroom! Are you going to buy every title twice just so you can watch it in 2 different rooms? That seems redundant! If you want an upconvert player, hook yourself up with one for no more than $100. That way you are at a minimal loss when you undoubtedly replace it...

I rarely buy BDs' I have the Blockbuster Total access, so I always getting them in the mail or changing them in at the store. Superbad is the only movie I've bought in like 1+1/2 years. I like Blu-ray but, they choose some really lame titles to transfer over. Besides, I don't have a surround sound in the Bedroom unlike my fam room. That being the case I just need one that does 1080i well since my bedroom tv is unable to do 1080p. No need for any advanced audio features. Just a solid video performance.

If you have a standard dvd player (non-so called upconverting), 480i/p and have an flat panel or other tv that has a native resolution of 720p or 1080i/p, your tv will automatically scale that dvd signal to mate with its native rez. So, in essence, as long as you have a tv that has an hd or better native resolutions, you already have an 'upconverting' dvd player.
