It's not like they're going to be sold out. The price is always higher too and drops closer to release week.
I understand preordering a week before to get it on release day with Amazon Prime, but why pre-order before that? |

Sometimes there are lower prices early on (Lone Wolf and Cub collection, Rush Hour collection, etc.). I imagine people preorder to "lock in" that price.

What he said -- price fluctuates sometimes. On Amazon, you get the lowest price it ever hits before release.
Also, if I'm sure I'm getting it, there's no point in procrastinating. |

Honestly, that's about the only scenario where it makes to pre-order. Either that or a limited edition that will sell out. Other than that, I don't get it at all. |

It'll be interesting to see if the Lone Wolf and Cub pre order price actually sticks. I preordered it as well when it was mistakenly priced at 50% off. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

These days, with things going out of print suddenly, it's nice to lock in an order right off the bat when I'm financially able to do so.
Since I always deduct the money from my ledger while I'm actually placing an order (instead of waiting for my card to be charged), it's also nice to order something months in advance, and then know that something that I already paid for a long time ago is going to be in my mailbox. I'll occasionally cancel an order and go with another supplier if the pre-order price dips drastically, but, if my pre-order is within five dollars or so of the final price, then I don't even bother. |

Sometimes you just really want a title asap and can't be arsed to wait ages for that inevitable price drop.
But in all seriousness, it's rare that I pre-order nowadays. Nine times out of ten, it's only limited edition titles that I pre-order, just in case they go out of print all too quickly. |

So I don't have to think about it. I know Amazon is going to have the lowest price on release day, within a buck or two, and I don't have to keep track of anything. For a title I know I'm going to want, it's a no-brainer just to order and have it magically arrive on release day.

This. I've got the Amazon exclusive of Star Trek Beyond preordered to guard against missing a price drop somewhere along the way. I'm still not sure the toy spaceship is worth the price premium but there was no reason not to put in a preorder just in case.

If I am going to buy it, I might as well pre-order it just to save the trouble of remembering to pick it up later. I don't have many stores around, so I can't trust that I can find what I want in one. Websites like Best Buy and Target usually ship pre-orders out early too, and Amazon Prime usually can get it to you on release date, so pre-ordering can sometimes get you the item quicker.
Prices are generally going to stay the same around the release date anyway. If it's something I don't want bad enough, I can wait til the prices drop, which could be months to years later. Otherwise, I see no harm in pre-ordering months in advance. So why not? And sometimes they do sell out. I pre-ordered Return of Dracula on Amazon last week when it dropped to $12.99, and they didn't get enough copies this week to satisfy all of the recent pre-orders. I imagine most of the ones who did order early got theirs already. |

I've pre-ordered plenty of titles that have dropped in price earlier on during the pre-order period, but then went up in price and didn't drop again, until weeks or months after the title was released. If you want a title as soon as it's released, then pre-ordering months in advance is a smart thing to do in my opinion.

I pre-order everything I want to get the lowest price through Amazon's guarantee. Every Thursday or Friday I take a quick look and cancel what I don't want anymore or can't fit into my budget agreement with the wife. Works out well.

If I could then I would pre-order everything.
See it, pre-order it, forget about it. Why waste time checking back on a title you're going to buy anyway, and perhaps forget about, unless you keep a list? Some people like lists, but others don't, and it's time that could be better spent contributing to the database here. Or watching movies. It also supports that title or series, and the manufacturer with guaranteed week one sales. And the more pre-orders there are then the more that the retailer knows to order so that there are less-to-no shortages. If you want to see a tv series continue in Blu-ray, or more films like the one you're buying, then I think the best option is to buy multiple copies. I don't know anyone who does that, but I think the next best option is to pre-order. Get the manufacturer/retailer that Week 1 money that they like so much, rather than warehousing that copy for another week, month, year, 5 years, etc. Also, more pre-orders means more exposure for that title based on the algorithms that sites like Amazon uses. Higher rankings on the "Amazon Best Sellers Rank" lists, and a better chance of appearing on lists like "Customers Who Bought This Item Also Bought". So that's support too, and helpful (ever so slightly) to fellow fans who share your tastes. |
