Default I can't decide...help! (TV size & seating distance)

OK, I haven't posted or replied to a thread in awhile, but I'm having a hard time deciding on what to get. This isn't a BD question per say...well, sort of is. I'm looking to buy a new 1080p TV for the BD player I plan to buy. What is the best size TV for a viewing distance of 7-8 feet. This will be on a stand, not a wall mount. I have a 32" Sharp AQUOS now and 40" TV's are the same width, but about 3" higher, so it seems like the 40" won't be that much different. But a 46" seems too big and bright for a small space like my tiny New York apartment. I'm looking for an LCD, not a plasma. The plasma weighs too much and has too much glare from the glass. Thanx guys!

Go 46. Trust me, it's not too big. I wouldn't necessarily go any larger than that, though.

Go into a store and stand back from the 46 at about that distance and see how you feel about it.

Do yourself a favor and wait as long as you can possibly stand it.

When the BD player that you want comes out, I can promise you there will be combo deals and the rest of it on gear.

There will also be aggressive holiday sales, in general.

Just something to think about. Wait a little longer!

What kind of budget are you looking at?

A 46 inch 1080p set at that distance with a quality source is going to be a knockout, my man.

Trust me, I am going to wait. Not by choice, but because of the length of time its going to take me to save the cash. But I guess that will work out better for me in the end. I'm looking at the Samsung which runs about $4,000 with tax, plus another $1,000 for a BD player. My player won't be purchased until next year. Thanx JT!

Yeah, you're going to see some sick deals around that time. The low to mid 40's in size will do you well. Coming up from a 32 incher you're going to be blown away with an extra 10 inches. Night and day difference.

Make sure you take the time to go into places and demo TV's that get your attention. Good establishments and sales people will allow you to take your time to use it, plug a DVD player or a game machine in there, take it out of torch mode, and really see what the thing can do.

Any place that doesn't allow you to do the above? They shouldn't get your business.

You can do good research to a point reading magazines and online and what not, but I really can't implore you enough to do as much hands on as you can.

I like Sony's overall track record better vs. Samsung in the display market myself.

Samsung deserves kudos for some of the things they've done, but 9/10 times I'm going to favor Sony here.

If you had the space and budget, I'd tell you to buy that 50 inch Sony SXRD LCOS set without hesitation. Those SXRD sets are the best overall, imo.

I wish they made those down in the 40's in size.

I was looking at that SXRD too, funny you mentioned that. Its on display at Circuit City and I was speechless, couldn't stop staring at it. I thought the Samsung had a little to much glare with that gloss black frame, but it also weighs about 25 pounds lighter than the Sony, not that it matters that much.

Honest to God, I know 50 inches would be pushing it for you a little bit, but maybe not. You might be surprised.

Remember: These aren't bulky CRT analog tubes with low refresh rates where you're going to have mad eye strain in no time. Completely different animals here.

THAT is the @#$%ing hotness my man. You can't do better than that thing at these price points, sizes, etc.

I'll second the SXRD... I feel that they are the best bang for your buck sets. I sold my dad one and he really enjoys it. I'm an LCD fan myself, but only because I can't get over the bulb aspect. I have a Samsung LCD, but my next one will most likely be a Sony, although I will give Sammy a look. Sony sets seem to have a better processor and faster response times, although on the spec sheets the Sony and Samsungs look identical. If you get a Samsung set, make sure you have the ability to turn off the DNIe. Even if you like the picture with it on, you'll appreciate the ability to turn it off if you would like.

ProvenFlipper makes some excellent points. I purchased a Sony KDSR60XBR2, a 1080p SXRD rear projector, IMO the finest set out there! I sit 10' from the screen and at first I thought it might be too big. I went from a 25" to the 60" and the first night it felt like an in my face experience, but once over its massiveness, I was elated for several reasons; it provides me a cinematic experience watching DVD's, I wear glasses - now I can read scrolling text more easily, even without my glasses, the bulb replacement is 'consumer friendly' allowing the owner to easily replace the bulb without a technician, a service call or a service charge.

So, as many are encouraging here, consider going to a screen size large enough to give you the experience your looking for, and if its a Sony SXRD you just can't go wrong, especially attaching a Blu-Ray or HD-DVD Player to it. It's worth saving for, missing alot of lunches out, eating cheaper dinners, raising those thermostats up a little, and so on. The sacrifice and the investment will pay you back will thousands of hours of thrilling experience. Enjoy the ride !!!

Jim

The reason the sammy and sony look so alike is because they are made in the same factory its a brand new samsung factory. THe only difference is the sony tends to have a little bit better color points and tends to allow more customization plus the sony menu system tends to be superior to the samsung one.

Well I checked out the 50" Sony SXRD today. They had a sample BD playing, the one with 50 First Dates, Ultaviolet etc. When Spider-Man 2 came on, I could NOT believe how amazing it looked, talk about crystal clear..wow! Moving on, the 50" is too big for my TV stand. The TV is about 18" deep and so is my stand. It also hangs over too much on the sides. So I guess the 46" is my goal. I will probably take Provenflipper's advice and go with the Sony KDL46V2500. I like the XBR, but that too hangs over the sides too much. I will still take any and all advice though.

Do you have to keep the stand? The SXRD comes with its own matching stand and all that.

A lot of these stores will give you a sweetheart deal and throw in the stand "for free" or whatever if you're ready to haggle and they can tell you're serious about buying.

Scroll down to the very bottom. See the stand? See the price? That's BS.

If you come in locked and loaded you get that stand for a hell of a lot less than that, if not free outright.

In other words, get ready for price matching and haggling up the wazoo.

Easy, go to your local BB. Ask to speak to the customer experience manager and say you want a deal that your willing to buy the stand, tv and whatever else you may need to get er up and running, also ask about the HD advantage, you'll save hundreds right there!

Yup. My best friend did precisely this three months ago and it really went well for him.
