Talking 7.1 Surround Sound Effects off of DTS HD Master & Dolby True HD lost?

HI all. Ok i put my PS3 on Linear PCM, then i put my Onkyo905 on DIRECT. Do u guys know that only the left and right speakers with the base box worked. I have a 7.1 surround sound hookup and i put on the FLY & everything was just in LOUD increments in the front speakers only. I heard NO kind of SWISH or sound running around the 7.1 speakers at all. I was SO disappointed since i heard how HD Master, lossless & dbly True are supposed to be the BEST. Then when i took it off, switched the ps3 to bitstream then put it on thx Neural 7.1, THEN i heard it around the speakers. What gives? Did i do something wrong? Y have a 7.1 surround, or even a 5.1 Surround if u can't hear it SWISH and awe u cause it's only coming out of the front 2 speakers? How can that be the best?

Because you put it on "Direct" which is just the front speakers and sub. If I ever switch my Yamaha receiver to "Direct" the HDMI kicks out.

Don't ever switch it to "Direct" for blu-rays.

You also have another major problem with DTS HD MA and that being that the PS3 cannot decode it so all you get with it is DTS core.

Yeah i put it on Direct because one of the guys here told me i need to put the ps3 on Linear pcm and it would send out the signal as pcm, then putting the 905 on Direct would allow that signal to go through the 905 without a conversion. Was he wrong? What would u suggest i do so i can get the HD Master or Dbly True HD sound or PCM sound so i can hear it on my 7.1 system? VERY IMPORTANT for me to know, thanks

Yeah i know the ps3 cannot decode it but my 905 can decode anything, it's an AMAZING receiver. Even still, i know the ps3 cannot bitstream the HD sound to the receiver so my receiver, which has the capability of decoding the dobly true and HD master, can decode it.......that is why this guy here told me to put the PS3 on linear PCM, then put the receiver on direct and it would throw out the sound through the receiver. What do u kindly suggest so i can get the FULL HD Master/dbly true sound on the 7.1 surround?

I don't have your particular amplifier, but I think that whoever told you that is most definetely wrong here...

I have a Pioneer Elite, and I also set my PS3 to PCM....

However, I do not touch my surround options at all.

When you put your Onkyo on 7.1 THX, all you are doing is telling the amplifier to guesstimate what the other two back channels are supposed to be getting out of them....

I am assuming you are doing this by using some kind of advanced surround option on your remote or reciever, but you should not be doing that at all....

Turn the advanced surround options off, so that your reciever can except the PCM signal as is......

Atleast, like I said, this would be my guess.

I don't mess with my surround options at all, unless I want to listen to music in fake 5.1....

I just tried what u suggested and the 905 has no such settings. The 7.1 was setup on it's own through the Audyssey Auto Calibration based on the amount of speakers i have on it, in this case being the 7.1 setup. IT has MANY sound choice, for ex., dobly EX, Dobly PRO, THX, Dobly Dig. Ex, Neo 6, All Stereo sound, etc.. Any idea which one i should put it on so i can get this master HD sound out? My ps3 is on linear pcm but yeah, this guy here told me to put my receiver on Direct and i will hear the sent sound in HD. Even if i wasn't listening to the back surround speakers that make it 7.1, and just listen to the regular back surround 5.1, i still got nothing out of it. It's CRAZY complicated to get to hear this HD sound. Believe it or not, on the 905, 16 gauge monster cabling, stand and the speakers, cost me 3200 bucks right there and i still can't get this work right where i hear the HD sound on my 7.1 LOLOL. HELPPPPP lol

in the PS3 settings...what do you have checked off as far as frequencies selected? (all 5.1 and 7.1 PCM should be selected)

Settings - Sound Settings - Audio Output Settings

"Direct" setting in the Onkyo is ok as far as settings go. (I like to use THX Select or DDPLIIxCinema...preferences vary)

"Direct
In this mode, audio from the input source is output
directly with minimal processing, providing high-fidelity
reproduction. All of the source’s audio channels are
output as they are
."

(SS316SRV, I have never heard of Direct mode "kicking" HDMI out??)

"Neural THX 5.1/7.1
Neural-THX Surround employs psychoacoustic frequency
domain processing, which allows delivery of a
more detailed sound stage, with superior channel separation
and localization of audio elements. The Neural THX
5.1 and Neural THX 7.1 modes can expand any 2-channel
stereo source for 5.1- or 7.1-channel playback
"

Ok, this is what im thinking...for some reason, the PS3 is outputting in stereo for some reason, which is why on "Direct" you only heard the Left and Right...and on Neural, the 2 channel was simulated into 5.1-7.1

Id recheck the PS3 settings...

MY MAN i appreciate u going through the trouble of putting diagrams and all that instruction for my dumb ars loolol. I actually checked the settings on the ps3 and ALL of the them were already checked. That was done automatically the day put the HDMI 1.3a cable from the ps3. That day when i set it up, it checked it all on it's own. I just checked it and it's all selected so i have NO idea why only 2 channels are being heard. The speakers are but 2 months old IF that, everything works but for some reason i cannot get that HD sound coming out of the ps2 to sound off in 7.1 glory or even 5.1 glory.

NO no dumb question at all, help is help. No sorry it's a typo. It's a 1.3a hdmi cable from the ps3 to the onkyo 905 receiver and then the 905 hdmi 1.3a to the monitor. I turned off the video upscaling from the ps3 including the ps2 smoothing and dvd upscaling that the ps3 has. It's all off. I let the 905 do all the upscaling and work. With the exception of the ps3 sound. I usually put the ps3 at bitstream for anything EXCEPT when i'm watching a blu ray that has HD Maste Audio or Dolby True HD or 5.1 uncompressed/lossless, that's when i have the problem that i've explained where i can only here the left and right speakers. To be honest with u, i have NO IDEA how Good it's supposed to sound over the regular dlby dig. or dts or all channel stereo, or thx, or ddpl2, or anything. Actually no matter what i'm watching, i have NEVER heard of that super CRACKING ans SWITCHING across the speakers like that. Yes i've heard sound coming out of them like when i have the thx neural 7.1 on or the all channel stereo...when i'm using those 2 sources, i can here the same voices and sounds exactly on all of the speakers, not divided either like the voices in the front and the music in the rear. All the same just in each speaker. It's quite perplexing to say the LEAST my man I know the connections are correct, everything is new, i just don't get it. Does the HD sound really make that much of a difference? I am thinking if it doesn't then i would just get rid of this all and go back to a bose like the v20. Experts opinion MORE Than welcomed. Thanks

Yeah they all say last vaild, but this 905, unlike my 875, does not have multichannel showing or give me any button or ability to choose multichannel. I'm thinking maybe that is where the problem lies. The 875 has that multichannel button for selection and at the source menu as well but this 905 doesnt. Instead it has DIRECT (which i was told here that it's exactly the same as MULTICHANNEL) and some button called PURE AUDIO but when i pic that one, that button lights up blue and the display itself shuts off. The onkyo is still on but it doesn't look like it because all u see is that blue pure audio ring on and the display itself is just off showing nothing. Not sure if either of those are the problem as well. Read the manual but doesn't clarrify anything and Onkyo themselves suck as far as knowledge or customer service help. Go figure lol

I also noticed that the ONLY thing not checked off on the ps3 settings under the audio hdmi sources was AAC...not sure if that has anything to do with either or if the DIRECT or Pure audio does (this one shuts off the display while a blue button goes on. As stated b4, someone here told me direct and multichannel are the same, though i don't see how.

ok, well Im pretty stumped.

Do you have any Blurays with Dolby TrueHD on them? check it out...put PS3 on Linear PCM. Hit the "display" button on the PS3 remote and it will show you the Dolby TrueHD track is playing....see how it sounds?

Could it be that "The Fly" doesnt have a great surround soundtrack to to begin with?

Yes all tracks are chosen with the exception of something called AA3 or AAC. Yes i have movies with dlby True HD and HD MASTER Audio. Ok i just tried the movie 300 and it's showing dolby Tru HD 48kz 2.2 mbps vc-1 22.6 mbps, then i just tried Dr. STRANGE which is supposed to be 7.1 DTS HD MASTER AUDIO and get this.....it's playing at 5.1 DTS......i think DR STRANGE LIKED ABOUT THE 7.1 DTH HD MASTER AUDIO. The ps3 has it all checked out, the 7.1 speakers work perfect on the regular tv and u can here full stereo sound from all 7.1 speakers but not on this hd format. Right now the display for dr strange is showing dts 5.1 ch. 48khz 1.5 mbps. How WEIRD is this and it's on the PURE AUDIO with the onkyo display off and the blu button on. This is even weirder. LOL

Hit the surrond or DTS button, you have it on "pure" if the blue light is on

Yes i notice that the receiver jumps from the PURE to the Direct during start up. I see Dolby True HD AND English PCM 5.1 on Ghost rider. Which one is better? The PCM 5.1 or the Dby True HD?

Yes i tried Dr strange again, i think that movie is definitely NOT 7.1 HD Master Audio as it says, it only goes to 5.1 and my set up is 7.1
