We have the $299 players, now we need a $199 player.

They have talked about this before. I think the player was originally scheduled for Q4 '07, but was delayed until '08. It will also be profile 2.0, if I recall correctly.

It should put an end to HD DVD's price advantage once and for all, leaving the ps3 and exclusive studio support (and hopefully an exclusive Warner) to finally put HD DVD to rest.

I really have to give sony and the ps3 a round of applause. In this war they have held down the lines and leveraged the ps3 to allow time for funai and other ce'sto finalize their product and not rush it out. They never let hd dvd run away with this thing, and now inexpensive compliant with 1.1 or 2.0 will be hitting the shelves in 08. Funai will definately have an effect on this whole thing. 08 will be an exciting year.

Let's hope Funai will be more affordable but just as good as its predecessors from Asia.

If it works as good as the Funai breadmaker my wife bakes bread in I'm in... (best whole wheat I've ever had!)

All things considered this is actually a very decent, even stylish, looking piece.

I maintain my stance on this player from earlier this year. I still think it was kind of Fisher-Pricey looking. Unless, the unit on display was still a prototype. In that case, who knows. Still, there is a large market out there for affordable players like this, since many people don't believe that spending a bit more money for a quality name brand is worth it to them.

At some point, these boxes and similar nonames will come in pink, blue, green, purple and available in supermarkets. How's that for a chilling thought?
