Default Funai support for Blu-ray

People will concentrate on the possibility of "cheap" BD players. And note, Funai does make some products for Wal-mart.

But, another important thing to remember is that Funai also makes many of Denon's DVD players.

Denon is expected to announce a Blu-ray player later this year, so there is the interconnectedness of such things.

If they just would sell in the entire European Union too... (not only Germany)

2 million players for walmart by the end of the year I say . Seriously though this is good news. The only true advantage HD-DVD has over Blu-ray (I don't count the AVS zealots) right now is hardware cost. Once that barrier is removed and we see more parity it should hopefully remove all doubts by consumers that Blu-ray is here to stay.

Will it have HDMI support, or be like the cheap HD-DVD player and be only 1080i capable? I believe the latter, since most Wal-Mart customers would not own a 1080p television.

Pretty sure the spec requireds 1080p otherwise I'd say the Blu-Ray folks were stupid NOT to come out with a 1080i/720p player until now.

So when are these players coming out? I really don't like Toshiba hd-dud player getting more sales out there.

Toshiba recently stated that they have 60% of the stand alone market with 150k units sold. That puts blu-ray at 100k stand alones as it sits. So with blu-ray stand alone players at DOUBLE the cost, its only 50k behind, and that 50k includes all the fire sale players they've sold so far. So really, how concerned should you be?

Also, Sigma Designs said they expect 2.5 million blu-ray stand alones sold by end of the year. They obviously know more then we do. Cheap stand alones are coming. And dont buy into the hd-dvd hype train. Its full of something that really stinks.

On the floor info from IFA:

Doesn't sound too promising for getting a player from them soon:

i call BS this FUD on AVS is pathetic the reason being thats not what they told their investors:
http://www.funaiworld.com/investors/...df/ks_e561.pdf

page 11.
page 12.

i tend to think this has more value than someone's "I TALKED TO A REP" and HE/SHE said. the fact they even have a proto type is saying alot anyway. that means they are intending to release a unit. which is what they have told investors

I seem to recall a lot of "prototype" nonsense questioning whether the release of the Toshiba HD-A1 would happen on time.

Let's hope for a CEDIA announcement.

Yeah, I seriously think this is a CEDIA thing. These players will likely be subsidized somehow (waiving of royalties or something), and probably limited to the US market.

Hmm...that might just be it. I'm thinking we'll hear more at CEDIA.

Huh? Where did it go. I could've sworn I just saw a pic from Rob Zuber. Maybe it was an old one?

No offense to Funai, but who on this forum is actually thinking of buying one of their Blu-ray players? I know, I'm not.

Well it's not my style, but I wouldn't say it's Fisher Price looking.
They're probably trying to make it look easy and inviting instead of technologically intimidating. It will probably sell well.

I wouldn't, but someone will. I think that if the light across the front stays on all the time, it could be annoying.
