Default Funai coming out with low-priced Blu-ray player next year

Apologies if someone already posted this news:

Funai coming out with Blu-ray player next year, should increase low-end competition.

Quote:
The company, which is known for its low-cost consumer electronics products, plans to have a Blu-ray Disc player available before the end of 2007, said Naoyuki Takanaka, a spokesman for the company.

The product won't be sold under the Funai name but offered to other consumer electronics companies on an OEM (original equipment manufacturer) basis for resale under their respective brand names.

Takanaka wouldn't disclose Funai's target price for the player but a report in Friday morning's Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun industrial daily said it will cost around US$500, or about ¥60,000.

Well this is good news as it would cover all the bases for Blu-ray... with a broad range of top of the line manufacturers players and now low cost craptacular players. Another argument for hd-dud dies.

I wonder what brand name it will come out under? Sorny? Panaphonics? Magnetbox? (Simpsons reference there for the uninitiated)

When did 2007 become next year?!

Well, well, well, a $500 SRP BD player.

At least one more to come, my sources tell me.

Funai is a company that Denon (and several others) typically outsources to, if I recall correctly.

Dare I read anything into that kind of connection?

This could be where Brian's $399 wished for BD player could come from.

Funai is junk. I can tell you that Denon has bought some Blu-Ray players to reverse engineer. Mainly the pioneer elites.

Nonetheless, players at this pricepoint will turn some heads and can't hurt Blu-ray.

Yeah, that'll kill any so called advantage that "cheap Chinese players" could possibly have for HD-DVD. I say: Bring on the cheap Funais!

Make 'em about $299 or so.

Default Now Blu-Ray has Cheap Players too...

Well, there goes another supposed HD-DVD "advantage".

So the last few HD-DVD selling points have all but evaporated...

Porn...check
Cheap players...check
Universal...???

I still firmly believe that cheap players and porn will not be a factor. However, it's nice that HD-DVD has one less talking point to stand by

Are you saying that Denon is working on a BD player? If so, how do you know this and when will it be out on the market? If this is true, it´s huge news

Thumbs up The cheap Chinese players are coming for Blu-ray first, before hd dvd!

http://www.engadgethd.com/2007/02/16...ng-the-budget/

Funai getting into the Blu-ray player game, courting the budget set

Funai isn't ruling out an HD DVD player either, but the Blu-ray player will come first, and most likely will hit a near bottom pricepoint for its category, at least if Funai's LCD methods are any indication.

Is this posted anywhere over in the AVS for the HD-DUD fanbois to choke on? After all, cheapo players, porn and Universal is the way to win a format war according to them... and now BD has two of those things.

The hd-dud house of cards is collapsing.

Funai is Japanese, they run all the budget brands. They actually account for a huge proportion of HDTV sales by units ($500 WalMart types), not by revenue though.

Good news

"Coming" guys. Coming.

No adding letters!!!!

HD DVD talking points are disappearing one by one. Combined with the Studio Canal BD news this has been a very good week for HD DVD

Dunno. But, Denon won't announce a BD player until they are ready to ship.

^^ And that Funai makes many of Denon's DVD players should be an indication that something is probably being discussed.
