Default Funai posts solid Blu-ray sales

Quote:
Funai Electric Co Ltd has posted operating income for the first time in three quarters in the April-June 2008 quarter[...]In the DVD equipment business, DVD player sales declined 45% YoY to ¥5.7 billion and DVD recorder sales also dropped 14% YoY to ¥4.3 billion. On the other hand, BD player and set top box (STB) businesses, which Funai recently started, contributed to the segment sales.

BD player sales totaled ¥2.1 billion, while STB sales reached ¥6.1 billion. The Blu-ray player business has broken even, already covering development costs, Funai said.

"The market still consists of a small number of manufacturers. Having successfully joined the frontrunners significantly helped with breaking even," Sakata said.

We know that the players sold starting Memorial Day weekend (last week of May), and they sold ¥2.1 billion, which comes to $19.2 million. If we go just on the shelf price of $300 (not counting discounts/gift cards/etc.), they sold at least 64,000 players in those 5 weeks, or between 12,500 and 13,000 a week. Of course, if they're going by price to retailer, that would mean even more sales.

Now, considering that Sony has said that they made up 46% of BD SAL sales as of July, then that means that at the minimum, 100,000 BD SALs were sold in June, and that's just assuming nothing sold but the Funai and Sony. Sales of the top 20 titles for that month were 960,000. Not too shabby, IMO.

BTW, we know (thanks to Lee Stewart and mikemorel ) that they "weren't flying off the shelves", so we could assume all the others combined could have sold significantly more players.
