Default Blu-ray vs HD DVD: What's best for me?

Blu-ray vs HD DVD: What's best for me?

Quote:
With Blu-ray and HD DVD fighting for the title as the number one high definition video format, this causes a problem for the consumer. Which format provides the better features? Which format has the better movies? These are just some of the questions that many people will be asking themselves when looking at these two new successors to DVD.

In an attempt to answer some of these questions, PSU.com provides a look at what each format has to offer, and what our thoughts and predictions are for the future...

Let me think about it...

Blu-ray.

Seriously, the survival of HD-DVD is in doubt at this point so I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

I dont think you will find one Pro HD DVD person here. You may find neutral but I will bet you that 99% of the people will tell you that Blu is the best way to go. Thats why we are all here isnt it?

Geeze, I've seen trolls banned, but this thread should be banned.

Every argument HD DVD has over blu-ray is quickly fading, or has faded. The last valid argument they had was cost, but even that margin is becoming nothing more than a red smear.

I admit, BD had to play the "me too" game when it came to PIP and production costs, but that little wedge isn't fulcrum enough to unseat blu-ray.

Give it up already you desperate red campers and spit out the red kool-aid while you still can.

I'll be blunt: anyone who buys into HD DVD at this time (especially exclusively) is an idiot. The HDM industry as a whole is so pro-Blu it's not funny. (Which is kinda good, given Blu-ray's technical superiority.)

I'll admit to being a format neutral HDM owner and enthusiast that prefers Blu-ray. I own multiple players from both formats and have an extensive collection of HDM media.

When I look at the current state of the format war and ALL the facts and throw out the FUD there is honestly no way that I could recommend to any friend/relative/acquaintance to purchase HD-DVD. Everything is against them at this point and it's my belief that we are seeing the beginning of the end of the format war.

Good luck in your decision.

For the record, I have twice as much respect for you "purple" neutral guys than I do the rabbid red campers. Thankfully, very few in the blu camp have been sipping at the blu kool-aid and gone over the top.

I agree. From a lot of what I've seen, I think a lot of blu-ray supporters can just stick to the facts of why the format is superior without having to start calling people names and belittle their opinions. However, when you list the facts about blu ray, all I get from the HD DVD supporters is a hand-waving answer like "Oh the general consumer can't tell between lossless and lossy audio" or "1080i is good enough for the average consumer and most people don't even have 1080p-capable tv's". Or they will turn and use ad hominem attacks against the poster supporting blu ray. This is why it is upsetting to me when I read responses written by the ardent HD DVD supporters who cannot convincingly debunk the fact that blu ray format is superior. If they can do that, I would even consider going purple, but so far, none has convinced me with FACTS as to why HD DVD is the superior format.

i think you guys can stop jumping all over the OP now... the article he's linking is from PSU.com (hint - it stands for PlayStation Universe).

which of course does exactly what you all are advocating... pointing out the facts as to why BD is superior.

Did anyone actually read the article? It didn't go into too much detail (other than disc capacity). All it really says is that if you enjoy certain movies from certain studios, then that is the side you should be choosing. They made it clear that Paramount was only exclusive for 18 months and that some titles can still be found on Blu-ray.

As an article that just tries to be simple and straightforward, I thought it was fairly decent.

I'm going to be happy when Blu-ray finally win this war, and the FUD stops... nothing worse in this format war that FUD, bad news I can handle but it's the fear mongering that I want to be put to an end. I don't doubt ATM that BD will win this format war probably in 2008

The fastest answer I tell to customers is the better movies and more movies. Then I'll say that blu-ray holds more storage resulting in better video and sound quality. Then I tell them how many companies support blu-ray. Lastly the PS3: blu-ray movies and games starting at $400.

To most folks, the difference isn't going to be noticed. Hate to say it, but that's my view. Or it's not going to really be a deciding point.

People see 1080p, not "54mbps bandwidth" / "32mbps bandwidth".

The deciding factor for most people will be the studios.

Now, the 'technical superiority on paper' schtick matters to those studios. They want their stuff to look good.

To me this is like people who buy a $500 gaming console based on what games are out now... it's a stupid way to think. Within the next few years most people will demand 1080p on their 1080p TVs and yes, you can tell the difference.

Whenever folks make these "the better technology doesn't matter" arguments it reminds me of how we were never going to need more than a 50MB hard drive (not giga but mega).

It matters. Besides, why do we all buy the OCs or Macs that we buy? Better specs usually. Yet we actually utilize about a tenth of that power.

Do you spend 550$ for the Q6700 Core Duo or 950$ for the QX6700?

Does the average person, decide "Hey, I'll get the Q6700 instead, the performance difference isn't worth that much to me."?

I want to make my point clear. There is a point to the cost difference discussion, it's not one I personally feel is the appropiate discussion for deciding on for HDM. Buy based on what you want to watch. You'd feel really stupid if you were a hard-core Bourne fan, and you bought a BD player, and find out you don't get to watch your favoritest movies in HD 'Right Now'. Just like you'd be pissed if you were a Pirates or Die Hard fan and bought a Toshiba Rent-a-Wreck.
