Lightbulb DVD Pirating Impact on the Format War

We all know that Pirating DVDs is a very easy process & very rampant.

Do you believe that the easiest Format to pirate will be the most sucessfull because they will sell more Players to people who want free Next-Gen DVDs?

Or

Do you feel that when this happens the remaining Studios will jump ship from that format because they will be losing profit?

I was just thinking about this the other day and was wondering about your opinions.

I don't think companies want people to have the ability to rip and distribute pirated software. I would say it is way more profitable to sell a disk rather than sell the players.

So, more than likely I would say that the corporate support would lean to the harder-to-crack software. This is of course the exception of M$. We all know how pathetic they like to make security features

Blu-ray is the most profitable HDM option right now..

HD is becoming more and more popular...plus people will have a seriously tough time trying to crack that damn thing...

HD-DVD is like a cheap upgrade over DVD...

What they don't get is that the more a standard will be pirate frriendly and used in that way, the more studios will flee that standard and tend to play hardball.
If (heaven forbid) HD DVD was to win, I foresee all studios going Streaming VoD only through encrypted means within a year or two of that happening (and that is what MS wants after all, no?).

Actually, from what I understand, the newer Blu-rays encoded with BD+ are very difficult to crack, they take a very long time, and I guess it is a whole new game with every movie. So at the very least, it is much more difficult to crack a BD disc.

Only like the 1st two BD+ titles have been "cracked", and the crack only enables playback from a computer HD, it doesn't enable unlimited "back-ups" to be made.

The older Blu-ray titles are very hard to crack. One of the PC viewing applications had a key held in memory. This was somehow extracted - who ever did it must have had an excellent knowledge of the way O/s managed memory. Once this was encrypted the and the disc's with a new key were released also forcing an upgrade of the viewing software there doesn't seem to be any cracked titles floating around. There has been a great deal of noise that it has been cracked but no proof, after a while you get used numerous false claims and wait until there is proof. Up conversion of the 480p output does not count as a crack, although is still piracy and piracy of any form is NOT condoned here, excluding the Walt Disney variety that are in the Caribbean.

the format with less copy protect is sure to fail as, the studios are in this to sell discs if people are ripping them off due to lack of copy protection, then they'll sell less discs...

i'll be honest, i'm looking into a way to get myself a tide-me-over copy of transformers in HD without actually buying a HD DVD copy.

so, weak copy protection is/will be a good thing for me.

i will, of course, buy the BD when it comes out.

And with BD+, because each title will need to be independently cracked, the studios will likely get at least a few weeks of pirate-free sales. This has to be the priority for studios, because sales of each title go way way down with each passing week after the intitial release anyway.

maybe it would help the format get a starting userbase, as many people using pirating can't indeed spend much in DVDs, so we would have people with enough money preferring the new HD format and DVD slowly dying because of pirating

Actually you won't be honest if you actually go the piracy route. I'll say that even about an "opposing" format's products. It's not right and is essentially theft.
