Default The Big Short (Brad Pitt, Ryan Gosling, Christian Bale)

Brad Pitt, Christian Bale and Ryan Gosling to Star in Financial Drama ‘The Big Short’ (EXCLUSIVE)

Quote:
Following the success of “Moneyball,” Brad Pitt and his Plan B shingle have assembled an all-star cast for the next adaptation of a Michael Lewis bestseller.

Sources tell Variety that Pitt, Christian Bale and Ryan Gosling have come on board to star in “The Big Short,” Paramount and Plan B’s adaptation of the Lewis book “The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine” that Adam McKay is writing.

The nonfiction novel tells the story of the build-up of the housing and credit bubble during the 2000s that led to the financial crisis of 2007-2010. Paramount had no comment.

Pitt will produce with DeDe Gardner through their Plan B banner. Whether McKay is also directing is unknown, as is when production will begin.

The book follows several key people who played a role in building the disastrous credit bubble. The feature adaptation will likely feature several a-list actors who have similiar-sized roles a la “Traffic” or “The Counselor.”

Similar to “Moneyball,” Pitt has been very passionate about getting this adaptation onto the big screen.

His Plan B company has emerged as quite the contender in serious dramas that tackle important issues, with “12 Years a Slave” landing last year’s best picture Oscar and its film “Selma” deep in the Oscar race this year.

Wait. Adam McKay? Like Will Ferrell's partner in crime Adam McKay?

Certainly seems interesting, certainly will challenge the guy, and that cast is great, but I'm not fully convinced by the trailer. No matter how many times it flashed up how shocking and outrageous the whole thing is.

Wow, that cast... only question mark is McKay; I like him, just not sure he's the best fit for this (Other Guys did tackle some of this, though...). Hopefully this turns out better than the last Carrell/Gosling movie.

Correction, the credits for The Other Guys tackled this stuff.

A big cast. Add this to the growing list of films out on Christmas.

McKay directed two of my favourite films of recent years, admittedly they were comedies, but hopefully this move into drama works out for him.

What I find shocking and outrageous is how Hollywood continues to "churn" out politically-motivated, economically-influenced films that deliberately express the views and theories by so-called journalists, who have the desire to create or write an adaptation from a history of events as though they are "impartial" to the details at hand.

I love Adam McKay. I loved how he developed The Other Guys. I believe that what he created at the end of that film, the "End Credits" in particular, was information detailing the 2008 Bernie Madeoff "Ponzi Scheme," and 2008 T.A.R.P. Bailout, which was something that was so different from anything he had done before. It was well addressed and tastefully illustrated at the end of that movie

This looks pretty awesome, but, yeah, Adam McKay is reason enough to not go in without reservation. The Other Guys is great though so I'm hoping he has skill that he uses when he wants and didn't just get lucky.

Trailer looks a little misleading to me. Making them out to be heroes that tried to prevent some crisis when it's just another bunch of guys trying to get rich.

"You won't be able to refinance."

"On all my loans?"

"What do you mean all your loans?"

"I have five houses. And a condo."

LOL

No matter how many times I watch this trailer that just keeps making me laugh. The look on Carrell's face is classic.

I'm really, really looking forward to this. GREAT cast.

This makes the second film where Carrell, Gosling and Tomei have started in together since Crazy, Stupid, Love.

Saw this last night, is a great companion piece to watching Spotlight the night before. Both have a large ensemble cast, both deal with real world, true stories, both are politically/socially involved.

I preferred this much more over Spotlight though. I loved this film. Was extremely funny, and was able to basically teach you about the housing crisis that happened a few years back, without it feeling like you're sitting in a class room. Some meta moments involving actors portraying themselves, lots of 4th wall breaking, lots of narration, some interesting photo/music montages. But once I gave myself over to the film, I was in for an awesome ride.

4/5.
