Default Are You Future Proofing?

With all the newer movies up for pre-order (Deadpool, Revenant, etc.), are you buying them even though you don't have 4K equipment yet? I'm seriously considering. If these were $5 more expensive, it wouldn't be a question for me. But that $30 price tag pulls me away.

yes :: carefully though (hoping they'll be Dolby Vision, however whether i 'really like' the movie matters most)
actually, going forward, it's my intent to exclusively purchase 4K HDR UltraHD Blu-ray (sounds difficult; it is?)

Considering this very thing at the moment with Deadpool. Not sure whether i just go for regular BD with slip now and pickup UHD later this year(when it will inevitably be cheaper) or just buy it now. Im a sucker for slipcovers so thats what is kinda making me stop and consider.

I will futureproof The Revenant and Deadpool, and anything else really awesome that comes out in the future. They come with the regular BDs and digital copies anyway, so why not?

Won't double-dip on catalog releases until we see if 4K really takes off or not, and if given movies are true 4K sources and not upscales.

Who, me?

I guess if I have any problem it's that I don't have a 4K TV, player, or cables right now, and I don't have the money for it. I don't want to buy a whole new TV, my current one's only a few years old.

Ah I see. It would help if I read the OP.

Yeah, $30 may seem steep, but for a really good title I know I want, I'm willing to accommodate an extra 4K disc, just in case. I've probably spent more on major Criterion, Twilight Time Blu-Rays, 3D titles, and even OOP DVDs.

I didn't think much of the 1080p craze in 2006, but I did start my Blu-Ray collection in 2008 before I got my first PS3. Now look where it got me.

Yes. I have The Martian 4K already and I don't even have the player. But I really doubt it would take a long time for me to get it. I feel that I should have it by the time The Revenant comes out

Yep, have Revenant and Deadpool pre-ordered. I'm going to be much more stingy with my purchases on the next format though.

As far as the 30 dollar price tag, that's nothing. I remember the early days of Blu-Ray where a fox catalogue title encoded in MPEG-2 with no special features was "on sale" for 34.99. Now I get a Blu-Ray, digital copy, 4K Blu, AND special features, in addition to 7.1 or atmos sound? Yeah. Sign me up.

Prices will go down. Probably later on this year for the 4th quarter and hopefully with more studios in the mix.

I am still trying to figure out which of the three players I want to get. I have the TV and a good receiver, but no player yet. I have the Martian on UHD Blu-ray, and I intend to get all other movies going forward in this format as well.

I tend not to "future-proof" my stuff. It even took me a long time to get into Blu Ray (it was after 2010).

Trying to chase the "next" thing is a never-ending battle, plus everything is cheaper for the later adopters. Media will always be available as well.

If they come out the same day for $5 more or so then I will get the UHD package. If not I'll just get the standard BD.

I find it interesting when people are balking over the cost of 4K movies being $30.00 - considering it to be the best disc format available... when I was consistently buying Laserdiscs - when "it" was considered to be the best disc format available at one time, and the average cost was $35.00 - and UP!

If you KNOW you're going to have all the equipment to watch 4K movies within the next 18 months of you wanting to buy a movie available in 4K... I'd say get the 4K version (unless the Blu-Ray only version has some rare exclusive/collectible you simply must have).

Personally... there is NOTHING available (or currenty slated to be released shortly) that is a "must have" in 4K, that I would buy. I would probably buy the 4K version of "The Abyss" (geez... we can't even get that on BD, let alone "enhanced for 16x9" on DVD), even though I don't have a 4K player yet (I do have a 4K TV now).

4K looks spectacular, but 1080P still looks great... and I have no intention of replacing all my BD (or HD DVD) movies with 4K. The best of the best movies, and the ones that will REALLY benefit from it, I will upgrade. I still have many DVD's - of which most are available on BD... I won't upgrade at all (like anything with Steven Seagal in it).

Also... I'm really not inclined to "beta-test" the first-gen 4K players. If they're anything like the first-gen BD players (including PS3's)... they're to be avoided! I think some people just want to be the first on their block to say they have the newest toy!!!

The only thing I'm buying right now are (all) Criterions, Disney Diamond Editions and TV on BD. The last movie I bought outside that is Miller's Crossing in November 2014. I was going to buy 4K/BD bundles, but seeing these initial releases has put me off for a while longer. These are obvious launch titles and I'm not picking any of them up - I'll hold out. When more elaborate editions start showing up I'll start buying UHD/BD.

Got my 46" Sony D3500 LCD in December 2007, then upgraded to a Benq W1070 projector in 2013. The Sony is still playing well as a second screen in "home office". This means I don't plan to upgrade a display/projector any time soon. The lamp is on 4900 hours, so when that gives I will probably replace the lamp for another cycle. After that maybe 4K are at a price level that'll make me take the leap. Will also need a new AVR at this point.

I totally get why anyone would start from day one, it's just not for me right now.

Probably won't go down much, maybe $5 at the most. Blu-ray new releases were $30 too for a long time. I can see catalog prices going down to $20 or less, especially if they release them as single disc UHD.

As it is the UHD appears to be only $7 more than the Blu-ray (for example The Revenant is $23 BD and $30 UHD). For those looking to future proof, I think it's a no brainer to spend an extra $7 and get the UHD disc too. It would probably be a long time before the UHD drops to $7 and even then it's better to have both in one case since bulging shelves of discs are the norm these days.

Same here, I know I don't want the Samsung, I would like a better player, so in the mean time I'm just buying disks.
