Default Q2 day-and-date: what we're getting and what we aren't

With all the talk about when Universal and Paramount are jumping onboard (no, I don't know), I decided to find out what whas the situation exactly. In other words, what are the major titles that are going to be released soon on DVD, and which of them are being released on Blu-ray or not?

To do that, I went to the site videoeta.com (which has all announced and rumored titles for DVD). I sorted the titles by month, and selected those that had a box office of at least $10 million.

April
Code:

Title Studio BD
27 Dresses Fox Yes
Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem Fox Yes
Alvin & The Chipmunks Fox Yes
Charlie Wilson's War Uni No
Cloverfield Para No
Juno Fox Yes
Lions for Lambs MGM No
One Missed Call WB Yes
Sweeney Todd Para No
The Golden Compass NL Yes
The Water Horse Sony Yes
There Will Be Blood Para No
Walk Hard Sony Yes

May
Code:

Title Studio BD
Bon Cop, Bad Cop BFS
First Sunday Sony Yes
Mad Money Starz
Meet the Spartans Fox
National Treasure 2 BV Yes
P.S. I Love You WB Yes
Rambo LG Yes
The Great Debaters TWC
Untraceable Sony Yes
June
Code:

Title Studio BD
Definitely, Maybe Uni
Grindhouse TWC
Jumper Fox
Step Up 2 the Streets BV
The Bucket List WB
The Eye LG
The Other Boleyn Girl Sony
The Spiderwick Chronicles Para
Vantage Point Sony
Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins Uni
Summary: the month which is hit hardest by Paramount/Universal absence is April, with Charlie Wilson's War, Cloverfield, Sweeney Todd and There Will Be Blood. May is unaffected: Uni/Para have no big titles for that month. In June (based on unconfirmed titles, because very little has been announced yet), the only big absence will be The Spiderwick Chronicles; the two Universal titles are comedies.

Possibly.

The first really big Uni/Para titles open in theaters in May: Indy 4 for Paramount and Iron Man for Universal.

Both of these titles will release on bluray this fall day and date. By that time both universal and paramount will have been releasing titles for awhile. Also, it was stated in an article on this site(around time of CES) that Indy 4 was already being prepped for blu release. Both of these titles are high on my want list. Throw in hellboy 2, hulk 2, step brothers(will ferrell), wall-e, etc etc.. its going to be a nice fall for bluray releases this year.

Thumbs up

It appears that $10 million may be the sweet spot as I have several titles missing from that list that have no Blu-ray announcement as of yet.

OK, so... "In The Name Of The King" being omitted should probably come as no surprise, and I really just added "The Hottie And The Nottie" as a joke. "The Final Season" isn't really a big surprise... though given the amount of "inspirational" sports films on Blu-ray, it's a wonder it wasn't released. "Killing Zelda Sparks" is a direct-to-video title that I just put on there because any time a film with Sarah Carter misses out on a HDM release, we are all the worse off! "Over Her Dead Body" didn't do very well, and it appears that NLHV has taken some time off (other than "The Golden Compass") given the fact that they've snubbed a title or two ("Rendition" comes to mind right off) since the start of the year. "Mad Money" that you listed is a little bit of a surprise (even though it didn't do very well) due to the amount of advertising the film got (of course, I guess the same could be said for OHDB), and it's not surprising that "Futurama" got HDM-snubbed again even though it's got a cult following.

While studios are still not releasing many TV on Blu-ray titles, there are several titles announced for the next few months that have been snubbed as well:

April
Code:

Title Month Studio BD
Painkiller Jane: Complete Series March Starz No
Friday Night Lights: Season Two April Universal No
Weeds: Season Three June Lionsgate YES
Burn Notice: Season One June Fox No
My Boys: Season One June Sony No
UniversalHD aired a marathon of this show one day, so it's available in HD, but given the ratings, I'm not surprised it's not showing up. FNL is Universal, and I'm not really sure it would make much of a difference anyway given how the show was shot. Though I'm not surprised, I'm still disappointed by "Burn Notice" and "My Boys" though...

WOW!! I'm going to be BROKE in June....

~Alan

Typically a movie hits DVD 4-6 months after theatrical debut. Early winter (Jan/Feb) titles tend to hit in 4 months, while big summer movies tend to take closer to 5 months. Christmas titles are often held till the following Xmas

I think NT2 took the longest being 5 months for a winter release. Yeah, like Santa Clause 3 came out in Nov 2006 but released on DVD and BD Nov 2007 same thing that will happen with Fred Clause

Average theatrical-to-DVD windows in 2007 were 4½ months per Video Business (first time they increased in years).

Don't forget that Lionsgate released "This Christmas" theatrically last year, but it won't be released to DVD/Blu-ray until this Christmas.
