SYNOPSIS

Features Include : The Thousand Eyes of Dr Mabuse, The Return of Dr Mabuse, The Invisible Dr Mabuse, The Testament of Dr Mabuse, Scotland Yard Hunts Dr Mabuse, The Death Ray of Dr Mabuse

Fritz Lang made two of the defining works of early German cinema with Dr Mabuse the Gambler and The Testament of Dr Mabuse, two masterpieces centred on Norbert Jacques’ nefarious literary supervillain. In 1960, Lang was charged by Artur Brauner’s CCC Film with making a third crime thriller centred on the infamous Dr Mabuse, completing a trilogy nearly forty years in the making. A huge success, The Thousand Eyes of Dr Mabuse gave CCC the confidence to launch into an entire series focused on the master criminal between 1960 and 1964, all starring Wolfgang Priess in the title role. All six films are presented here alongside a wealth of new and archival extras.

In Fritz Lang’s final film The Thousand Eyes of Dr Mabuse, the eponymous master of disguise (Priess) re-emerges in the Cold War era after a lengthy absence – and uses all manner of methods to insight murder and mayhem. The Return of Dr Mabuse sees him use brainwashed prison inmates to commit a litany of crimes while evading the German authorities and the FBI. In The Invisible Dr Mabuse, he seeks to use an amazing new invention – a device that renders the user invisible – to his own ends. The Testament of Dr Mabuse – a remake of Lang’s earlier film – has the German police tying themselves in knots as they try to figure out how their adversary could be continuing his reign of terror from inside an asylum. In Scotland Yard Hunts Dr Mabuse, Mabuse’s tentacles begin to creep across the English Channel. Finally, in The Death Ray of Dr Mabuse, the criminal mastermind comes to possess a weapon capable of unleashing untold destruction.

Directed by Fritz Lang, Harald Reinl (The Fellowship of the Frog), Werner Klingler (Police Raid), Paul May (Duel with Death) and Hugo Fregonese (Black Tuesday), the CCC Mabuse series continues Fritz Lang’s legacy while playing into a popular market taste in Germany for adaptations of literary krimis – or crime thrillers – that can also be seen in the enormous popularity of films based upon Edgar Wallace’s novels throughout the 1960s. The Masters of Cinema series is honoured to collect all six of the 1960s Mabuse films together in this set, presented in high definition from new 2K restorations and available for the first time on Blu-ray in the UK.

I have the "Dr. Mabuses Meisterwerk" box set from UniversumFilm but this trumps it. A definite purchase!

I’ve only seen two of these movies, and it’s probably been close to twenty years ago. This looks like an awesome set!

Now if only Eureka could give us CCC's Bryan Edgar Wallace films! I especially long to see THE PHANTOM OF SOHO in HD.

I'm super excited for this set and already put my order in at Orbit for it. I've got the Eureka blu-ray of 1,000 Eyes and a DVD with three of the others dubbed in English, but looks like I can retire those for this great-looking set.

Edit: Just noticed this set also has The Testament of Dr. Mabuse, so there's another stand-alone Eureka disc I can retire. I'm glad all the films have commentaries from Kalat; his commentaries on the Mabuse films are excellent and compelled me to get the Eureka release of Mabuse the Gambler primarily for that.

I wonder why the final two films are presented in 1.37:1. They were like that on the German set too. Just seems a curious choice given the period.

This box set contains the 1962 remake and not the 1933 original.

Thanks, I didn't know there had been a remake. Nice to know there will another new-to-me film in this set.

This truly has been a season of miracles! Getting ALL of the 60s Mabuse films in hi-def has been one of my most fervent wishes for YEARS! Now I can finally retire my frankly terrible looking DVD of the last four.

Bless you, Eureka!!!!!!

I was wishing for this on the Eureka UK thread a while back. My wish came true!

Killer artwork. This set will be absolutely epic. Now, Eureka, howzabout an epic box set of restored Edgar Wallace krimi thrillers?

Hope the movies will be uncut unlike the german box which uses the same CCC restorations.

How good are the film's post Lang's 1000 Eyes of...? Do they share any of the visual and storytelling chutzpah? Are they sufficiently entertaining to warrant getting the box?

They are not anywhere near as "good" as the Lang films. They are, however, still quite entertaining as often over-the-top 'Krimi' films in the Wallace tradition. They veer away pretty hard at times from Lang's controlled, moody mise-en-scene and into more 60s-ish quasi-Bondian craziness at times. Lesser, certainly, but still very very entertaining. I love them unconditionally, so definitely worth the box set price but YMMV.

In the trailer, the last two 60s Mabuse films are shown in a 4:3 aspect ratio. Is this accurate? Were these originally shown in academy ratio in the late 1960s, despite the predecessors being released in widescreen? Maybe someone really familiar with German 60s cinema can chime in.

Unlike the early Mabuses, these are not highbrow arthouse films, but pulpy 60s West German genre offerings. If you have a fondness for 60s continental European genre cinema (or are a German film completist), then these will be your thing.
