Mill Creek will be releasing what they dub a "Psycho Biddy" double-feature set, which will include two Joan Crawford films, Strait-Jacket (1964), and Berserk! (1967). As many here know, Shout! Factory just announced plans to release Strait Jacket themselves, so I suppose Berserk would be the main draw here.

Movie queen Joan Crawford (What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?) gives a terrific performance in this chiller from pioneer horror movie producer William Castle. Lucy Harbin (Crawford) goes berserk when she finds her husband in bed with another woman. Lucy axes the couple to death and spends twenty years in a mental institution for murder. After she is released, she moves in with family and hopes her nightmare is over... but a string of ax murders suddenly start occurring in the neighborhood and police think Lucy has reverted to her old ways.

BERSERK
Joan Crawford (Mildred Pierce) stars as Monica Rivers, the owner of a traveling circus plagued by a series of mysterious deaths. When a high-wire performer becomes the first victim, he is replaced by an even more daring aerialist who begins a romance with Monica. Their relationship draws envy from her business manager who is the brutal killer's next victim. As the police begin to investigate, bigger audiences flock to the show. The mystery swirls as a cast of suspects and motives rage with jealousy and revenge.

I wonder if the transfer is identical on both discs, and if either release will have much in the way of extras. Seems like Mill Creek is trying to get the jump on Shout!, here...

Remember when they tried to get the jump on Criterion by releasing their beyond awful Night of the Living Dead Blu-ray first? We all know how that turned out...

The difference is Night of the Living Dead is a public domain film so unless they wanted to spend the money to negotiate with the Romero estate, they weren't going to get a fully restored version with extras.

This is from Sony so like previous Sony licensed releases, it'll be from the same master but encoded differently. Mill Creek's will also be the budget release so don't expect extras. Mill Creek gave the same treatment to The Lady From Shanghai and the Charles Bronson films.

To be honest, I'm much more inclined to go with the MC release as this would be a blind-buy, and it'll no doubt be under $10 soon enough (especially with a DD 15% off coupon). Shout's release will be way more money, and likely use the same transfer. Plus of course, this also includes Berserk! Wouldn't be surprised if they released The Tingler eventually too.

I concede; that's a valid point. Not all of their releases are bad. In the case of Lady From Shanghai, theirs even best the TCM releases. Their William Castle two-fers are actually quite decent too. I just like Strait-Jacket so much that I'll pay extra for the Shout version. If this is the only way to get Berserk! though, I'll probably buy this too.

Yep, me too. I'm hoping for extras on the Shout version of "Strait-jacket"---at the very least, the ones that were on the DVD release. Also, a commentary track with Diane Baker would be a fantastic extra, though I don't know if that's likely to happen....

Th release date is NEXT WEEK, and already Amazon is showing this as UNAVAILABLE to order. I already have my order in an it's still showing as ordered, but I wonder if there's going to be an issue with this?

I'm wondering if this release is getting shelved because Scream just put out STRAIT-JACKET.

No. Scream has collector’s edition while Mill Creek has the movie-only.

Well, tomorrow is the release date, and Amazon still has this message up on my order:

I'm assuming there's some kind of hold-up or problem, because Amazon hasn't even gotten their shipment in yet to start fulfilling orders.

Normally, my weekly orders are mailed out already for release date tomorrow. I'm getting curious over this.
