Default 2001: A Space Odyssey: Long black intro???

During the very beginning of the movie there is a LONG black screen with music. Does anyone else get this on their PS3?

I had to fast forward to 30x to get to the start of the 1st scene.

I think that's how the movie is. I had to fast forward as well. I 1st thought something was wrong with the BD or with my PS3.

Yep...that's how Kubrick made it. You get to hear the music build.

It is called an OVERTURE ... all in black... instead of a title card stating overture... the film has EXIT MUSIC also.

Don't remind me of that movie. Biggest waste of my time. And yeah, I did 1.5x because I had already heard that music and wanted to get to the film.

Being a film buff myself, this movie is one of greatest film ever made. It's extremely deep and at this present, no one's able to figure out the whole answer to this.

It's very slow but for a reason. It's NOT for everyone, unless they want to analyze it. I love this movie and still watch it every once a while, trying to come up with good theory about it.

This movie is a piece of art.

The movie obviously is not for everyone but I could not agree more it truly is a work of art and looks absolutely amazing on Blu Ray. Kubrick is a movie making genius. There is a cool website http://www.kubrick.com/ which gives some great insight to some of the theories put forth in the movie.

A majority of folks who went to see 2001 were either HIGH or on LSD and the black screen and music had a combined "effect" on the folks in the movie houses !

thats not it.

you inject the LSD the very second the music starts, nearly to the second that the music is done and the movie starts is when you begin to trip on the LSD.

But you don't need theories -- the whole movie is explained in the novel, written by Arthur C. Clarke who also wrote the screenplay.

Finally, someone in this thread gets it. It is film for the sake of art. Not art for the sake of film. Like fine art, it visually stuns you and urges you to express the story from within and see how well it fits with the mild plot of the movie.

I too was a bit confused with the black overture, but waited to see what happens. When the intermission screen came up, I was a bit surprised but ran to the bathroom nonetheless.

This movie is an event in itself. I guess some people just don't appreciate true "art".

I think we should cut some of these folks a little slack. 2001 is an incredible film, but it's definitely not a universally-appealing movie and many aspects of it, including the overture, are uncommon in film and can easily be off-putting. Those things are also what make it great, but not everyone is prepared for them when they see the movie for the first time.

This one of my first VHS tapes. It was my first LD. It was also one of my first DVDs (and I've since triple-dipped).

It will be one of my first BD's as well.

I'm either OCD or a big fan of the film (although those are NOT mutually exclusive, are they?)

I have never read the book nor do I have any desire to.....My point is that the movie presents many aspects to ponder without any explanation which is the true genius of the movie! If Kubrick were to "explain" the meaning or theories in the film it would discredit his work and there is no way we would be talking about the film more than 30 years later. "The infinite and Beyond"
