Default Question about the Yamaha V661

I know it's a 7.1 receiver, but I only want a 5.1 setup since I have a fairly small room I'm putting it in, so can I use it as a 5.1 receiver? I don't want the receiver to send the signals to two speakers that don't exist resulting in a whole lot of signal loss.

Also right now I have the 361, and it outputs 100 watts per channel at 6 ohms, but the 661 outputs 90 watts per channel at 8 ohms, so will the 661 sound better or worse when it's just playing the basic DD or DTS?

Thank you guys ahead of time.

Default 5.1 is just fine.

I install home theaters for a living. When you do the auto set up with that unit I will listen to see what speakers you have and then turns off the unused ones.
NOTE. connect your rear speakers into the surround speakers outputs not the surround back. the surround back are ONLY for use of a 7.1 system. So even if your rears are behind you or on the side wall. USE the surround out.

Hope this helps.

Thanks man. I think I saw in another thread you saying that you have this receiver, so does it sound amazing with PCM 5.1? I have a PS3 and I don't intend on buying a standalone for awhile, so I thought this receiver would sound awesome since it supports (I think) multi-channel PCM.

well, to be fair, I do not have a Yamaha 661. (I have a Pioneer Elite)

But have heard one before and have also conversed with others who do have one. It is an excellent receiver with impressive capability. BurrBrown DAC's each channel for stunning 7.1 PCM. You'll love it. (it can even process 5.1 PCM into 7.1 PCM surround)

I don't think you could go wrong.

(found one for $399+free shipping)
