Default The Rhythm Section (Blake Lively to star in female spy thriller from Bond producers)

Blake Lively is attached to star in the spy thriller “The Rhythm Section” from director Reed Morano, and “James Bond” producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli.

IM Global will finance the film with Wilson and Broccoli producing through their Eon Productions banner, with IM Global co-founder Stuart Ford exec producing along with Greg Shapiro and Mark Burnell.

The movie is a contemporary adaptation of the first of Burnell’s “Stephanie Patrick” British series of four novels. Lively will play the titular heroine, who’s on a path to self-destruction after the death of her family in an airplane crash — a flight that she was meant to be on. After discovering that the crash wasn’t an accident, her anger awakens a new sense of purpose as she becomes an assassin to track down those responsible. Other novels in Burnell’s popular series include “Gemini,” “The Third Woman,” and “Chameleon.”

“We are thrilled to be bringing Mark Burnell’s ‘The Rhythm Section’ to the big screen with our partners at IM Global,” Broccoli and Wilson said. “It is exciting for us to be working with the immensely talented team of director Reed Morano and actress who have a strong vision for this very compelling story driven by a female protagonist.”

Morano received critical acclaim for helming several episodes of the hit Hulu series “The Handmaid’s Tale.”

The film will begin production this fall and will likely shoot in the U.S., the U.K., Ireland, Spain, and Switzerland.

Lively most recently starred in “The Shallows” and will appear next in “All I See Is You” opposite Jason Clarke.

Female spy thrillers seem to be the new thing lately. Atomic Blonde out later this month. And Red Sparrow next March.

Hopefully, they'll make a movie about lady spies with some kind of charisma or personality.
For some reason, a lot of them are super-serious, stoned faced angry and lack of any sense of humor.

More like Quantum of Solace in which Bond was essentially Jason Voorhees.
At least in his other Bond movies, he had some form of sense of humor or charisma to him.

Minimal, if any. Time to move on to a new Bond, and bring back the fun and charm

Blake Lively’s Spy Thriller ‘The Rhythm Section’ Lands at Paramount
DAVE MCNARY - AUGUST 16, 2017 | 01:31PM PT

Blake Lively’s spy thriller “The Rhythm Section” has landed at Paramount Pictures with the studio agreeing to buy worldwide distribution rights.

The project will be directed by “The Handmaid’s Tale” exec producer Reed Morano, from a script by Mark Burnell with “James Bond” producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli producing. IM Global will finance the film. Lively was attached to the project a month ago.

The movie is a contemporary adaptation of the first of Burnell’s “Stephanie Patrick” series of four British novels. Lively will play the titular heroine, who is on a path to self-destruction after the death of her family in an airplane crash. After discovering from a journalist that the crash wasn’t an accident and watching that journalist get killed, she adapts the identity of an assassin in order to track down those responsible.

Former IM Global head Stuart Ford, who was ousted from his post recently, will be an exec producer along with Greg Shapiro and Burnell.

Morano helmed several episodes of the hit Hulu series “The Handmaid’s Tale.”

Lively starred in “The Shallows,” Woody Allen’s “Café Society,” and “The Age of Adaline.” Morano and Lively are repped by WME. She is also managed by Management 360. The news was first reported by Deadline Hollywood.

The Rhythm Section sounds more like a musical drama than a "spy" movie and it also sounds kind of like American Assassin.

I'm really looking forward to this. It sounds grim and dirty. Her character is a heroin addicted prostitute who, in Blake's words, sets out on this task of revenge because she basically has nothing to lose. In her mind, her life is already over, so what's the difference what happens? It sounds like a really good role for her. I loved her character in The Town, who sounds a bit similar.

She talks about this film in a DP/30 interview from October:

It's somewhere near the end.

Doesn't this sound like little like La Femme Nikita?

She's picking some diverse and interesting projects. I can't say I've been unimpressed by any of her stuff in the last few years.

At least this takes the dumb notion of changing James Bond's gender off the table.

Maybe a tiny bit, but I'm pretty sure that this is going much harsher in tone. At least from what Blake said about it. Not to mention that I really like La Femme Nikita, so I don't see how that would be a bad thing anyways.

Agreed. She said that she's always looking for pretty wide-ranging sorts of roles. She seems to be succeeding.

I wasn't expecting her to have as much presence and range as she does. Of course, she hasn't gone down the "Serious Actress" route just yet, but she seems to be assembling a respectable resume.

It's funny to hear her talk about Gossip Girl. She was 19, hadn't really worked before, had no time to learn her craft. And the way they shot the show was insane! Crazy long days, a lot of the time they had script really, just learned their lines a few minutes before, shot two episodes at a time sometimes. It was just nuts.

Looking back on the show, it really is amazing it turned out as good as it did!

I thought she was excellent in The Shallows, giving a serious performance. She is picking unique, mature roles (like this, the former and All I See Is You).

Age of Adaline is really good too.

Actually, it's amazing she's able to work as much as she does considering she has two daughters, one of whom is still a baby.

Maybe she has Ryan doing most of the heavy lifting.

Production has been shut down for five months. Lively injured her hand during a stunt in December, but reportedly needs a second surgery to fully heal. Just under half the film has been shot so far.

So it'll more than likely mean it'll be pushed back from its Feb 2019 release.
