Question How does 1080p upscaled content look on a UHD TV?

I searched and searched but didn't get some good result about this issue. So I want to know from you guys that how a 1080p upscaled content looks on a UHD TV. I have a budget to buy a 49 inch tv only and I have two options to go for UHD or HD only but I want to know if a normal 1080p video will look better on a small UHD TV too? I am asking this because I will have to add USD150 to my budget to go for UHD tv only once its confirmed that normal video will look better on it then I will go for it.

Please Reply. Thanks!

I got my answer on another topic but what surprised me is that after 164 views no one replied. I don't understand why people are hesitant to answer this simple question even after owning a UHD TV

1080p content does indeed look better on a 4K display if you have a good upscaler. My 4K display has an internal upscaler and so does my Sony blu ray player. The upscaler in the blu ray player is better than my internal upscaler in the 4K tv. So I let the blu ray player do the upscaling when watching movies. So depending on the quality of the upscaler ymmv.

Should I Let my Av8802a Upscale instead of my 930c?

best way is just to compare the the upscalers and determine which does a better job.

I have a 4k bravia display and the BDP s6500 blu ray player, the bravia has a built in 4k upscaler and an option for "Master in 4k" upscale setting that can be enabled with Sony Mastered in 4k blu rays.

I ran a comparison test between the mastered in 4k upscale setting within the bravia and the BDP S6500 4k upscaler.

Between the two I've found the BDP s6500 to perform noticeably better as an upscaler. Using movies like like Elysium as the source material which is one of the "Mastered in 4k" blu rays.

Some other movies like Pacific Rim and Divergent series, look so jarringly sharp upscaled on the 6500, I was shocked that this kind of scaling capability was packed in such relatively inexpensive blu ray player. It literally looks like native 4k material, Using netflix native 4k material as a frame of reference to compare 4k material.

Im guessing Sony probably has a lot invested on making sure that the 4k adoption rate is high amongst consumers that they put some serious tech in their budget players to make it easy for early adopters to upgrade. I just wish the UI was better it took a bit of time for me to experiment and get the 4k 24fps to communicate correctly with the tv.

This is just from my own personal experience.

I've also heard a lot of good things about the 4k OPPO player also which seems to be one of the top players amongst the home theater crowd, but I do not have any experience with OPPO unforunately.

So if you have two different scalers in the video chain, i would just recommend you run your own comparison test to determine which scaler is best for you. Just make sure to use reference video material to do the comparisons.

I know nobody answered, but let your TV do it. The 930c has Sony's new X1 chip which is by far the best video processing chip on the market.

According to the results on that page, and the distance chart, to me it seems that 4k is totally unnecessary for many people unless they are going with a huge 75"+ screen or higher.

In my apartment, my couch is placed around 10-11 feet away from my 1080p screen. There isn't any wiggle room for placement in my apartment. I would need a 75-80 inch screen to make it worth it, and my apartment is small - that size panel would never fit against my wall. I think this 4k nonsense is a solution to a problem that nobody ever asked for. What makes the studios think that if the average Joe can barely tell the difference between 480p and 1080p, that suddenly he'll be able to appreciate 4k on any reasonably-average-sized screen? Blu-ray is struggling as it is, let alone an ever higher quality format.

Instead of all this 4k nonsense, they should be working towards making better-quality panels. Between flashlighting, hot spots, and very poor viewing angles with some brands (I'm looking at you, Samsung!), it's virtually a panel lottery out there trying to find a good one. How about making better panels with good viewing angles before focusing on more pixels?

I have to laugh because I hear the "panel lottery" complaint daily on my OLED owner's thread! Just about everything else you mentioned (flash-lighting/better viewing angles/etc) isn't an issue with OLED, but you'd think it was worse than LCD from the complaints. My point here is: I watch up-scaled 1080p (Blu-Ray) on a 4k OLED frequently, and it looks so good I can't imagine what UHD will look like (although I get a hint with things like Amazon UHD material).

I have noticed a difference since getting a 65" Samsung 4K over the weekend. The HD on DTV channels look much brighter vs my old 1080p set.

The answer is in general yes, but if you are sitting really far away it will look good on both with such a small size.

I have a Samsung 75hu8550. Blu Ray looks fantastic upscaled. It looks better imo than 4K Netflix.

4K Netflix has its moments but it's not a wow factor. I downloaded some 4K demos onto a Harddrive and was blown away how clear that looked compared to Netflix. Same goes for Amazon 4K

A general question: Does upscaling mean a change in resolution? I have a Xbox One S + 4K Vizio TV + 1080p Gravity Blu-Ray, but resolution still shows as 1080p.

yes of course, 1080p turns into 3840 pixels × 2160.

everything i watch on my UB900 4k player says 3840 pixels × 2160. im not sure if the xbox one upscales everything else

Potentially silly question - but is your XB1 actually set to output 4K in it's display settings?

All sources other than native 4K are upscaled to 4K for a 4K TV. For the majority of non-4K content, the TV will provide the optimal upscaling, but for some, say non-interlaced, a player or AVR may provide a superior picture. What you want to avoid is duplication of processing of content, i.e., Blu-ray player up scaling 1080p to 4K, AVR up scaling to 4K, TV up scaling to 4K.

In the example you shared, the XB1S does NOT upscale Blu-ray, so the source is 1080p, which is noted, however the content is upscaled by the Vizio to 4K because it is a 4K TV.

The Panasonic UB900 is extremely gratifying with its upscaling capabilities. Some blu-rays will actually look better than a few of the 4K Ultra HD blurays released.Transformers series on blu ray look spectacular upscaled thru the Panny along the Resident Evil movies.I recently checked out Pan's Labyrinth and it's an eye opener.Looks incredible.10 Cloverfield Lane just blew me away.It was awesome.I owned the Samsung before switching to the Panny and the reviews will verify the UB900's ultimate scaling ability.

I've been watching 1080P on a Samsung plasma for the past 8 years. I got my OLED yesterday.

The upscaled content from my Tivo Bolt is fine. Is it as good as it was on my 1080P Plasma? No it isn't but it is very close. If that's the trade off for enjoying 4K HDR content, so be it, I'm fine with that.
