Default Is Total HD an option with Warner at CES?

So not the clobber ratio we expected with Potter so far.

I know it really doesn't make a difference up to the last minute but Warner is so far scheduled to address both Blu and HD Dvd at CES.

Could we see the unshelving of Total HD discs? This way Warner is only making ONE disc until the format is decided. Seems to me that even though we are killing HD Dud, the cheaper players are letting them hang on longer then they thought. I have to think Warner is rethinking this strat?

I understand Warner wants an end sooner then later, but they need to decide if they want to be the company who decides this war or not or if they are going to let others fight this out and profit in the meantime.

Intelligent unbiased thoughts???

i think no, it will cost them too much to set up and sell, cheaper to ditch one format to create a winner and maximise profits. lets hope they jump the right way

That format is dead. Apparently the failure rates were so bad that it became economically unfeasible to manufacture in large numbers. I think if the TotalHD technology had worked better that Warner would have seriously considered it. The people that pushed that solution no longer work at Warner I believe.

It was Nickerson:s baby. It:s completely impractical period, 10x more so without being able to sell it to another studio

If I were to GUESS, it almost seems as these cheap players have muddied the waters for Warner to go Blu YET. The two months time isn't really enough time to see the impact these cheap players will have in Warners eye's.

My guess that they won't go blu YET. I think they still will, but not at ces. Depending on the reliability of Total HD, this may be a viable option in their case. I think they were looking for a much larger pull away of blu during 4th quarter.

Oh well, it would just be great for the to go blu in two weeks and end this sillyness.

I think you are right and they (Warner) will wait until March to go Blu-Ray only, they will fell by then if the buyers of the A2 and A3 were going to start buying the would be doing it by then.

They trashed this idea a month or more back, it was mentioned in a couple articles, right from the top execs mouth. In fact, Ron Sanders, their CEO was I think the one quoted as saying they were shelving the idea.

I wish that Warner would go Blu quickly, but I honestly think it'll still last longer than most people will think. I give it at least another year. I hope not, but most of my friends who have HD, have HD DVD because of the cheaper player. It's why I have HD DVD right now, but if prices keep dropping on Blu ray, you'll see things swing blu's way like having Warner go all blu.

by all accounts bd hardware standalones are outselling hddvd standalones at the moment, so maybe i was right this time last year when i said people wont buy cheaper hddvd players if the BD machines are not far off in price

The main source of revenue for Warner from the total HD disc was in licensing it to other parties. With Paramount going HD DVD exclusive Warner lost their core customer for Total HD. This is what many execs at Warner have stated as being their key reason for shelving Total HD. That and it is just a bad idea.

+1

WB will likely want to see at least quarter of sales after all the cheaper PS3s and DUDs come out from under the tree. Combined HDM sales are still less than 2% of the total market, pretty damn early still. Also, Paramount is locked to DUD for over a year still to come so there is no real rush for WB to forgo DUD sales.

What about a new format exclusively from Warner Brother, " Totally Messed up "
so sure you might not buy it right now anywhere.

Total HD was a waste from the begining if you ask me, It was a way for warner to cut cost for replicating 2 different formats and sell to everyone.

I never did understand why Warner would think they could fit a decent HD movie on a 15G single layer. Imagine shoehorning "King Kong", Bourne Ultimatum", "Transformers", "LOTR EE" etc on 15G disk.
