Default Ready Player One (2018)

http://www.joblo.com/movie-news/chri...arner-bros-112

now that Christopher Nolan's INTERSTELLAR has hit theaters, what might his next project be? According to The Tracking Board, it could be an adaptation of the sci-fi novel READY PLAYER ONE. The site is reporting Warner Bros. has made an offer to Nolan to helm a big screen version of the Ernest Cline book from a script by THE AVENGERS and X2: X-MEN UNITED scribe Zak Penn.

READY PLAYER ONE has been described as "the adventure comedy of Mike Judge’s Idiocracy meets South Park’s Imaginationland with a dash of Willy Wonka except all of the cynicism has been replaced by sheer geeky love," and is apparently filled with 1980s pop culture references.

An interesting concept that will get the boring treatment from Nolan to become a snoozefest. No thanks. Get Doug Liman.

Agreed. There's absolutely nothing in his filmography that would lead one to believe that he would take this on. Nothing.

Wow. I was hoping Nolan would do something small after Interstellar. As much as I like him, I'm approaching this one with caution. It is kind of neat seeing him going out of his comfort zone, though.

Nolan's wife/producer Emma Thomas has been on record saying that she doesn't believe Chris will do a small movie ever again.

He's a blockbuster filmmaker now. Personally, I don't see him going small either...even if I wish he'd do one more.

I think I lost interest when I saw the word "comedy" in the description. We have yet to see Nolan do comedy, aside from one or two dry gags.

Sounds like this could become Nolan's equivelant to Spielberg's 1941.

You know, these shock "Nolan's shit" comments aren't all that shocking now.

But yeah, this doesn't seem like a project Nolan would do, he's on that hunt for his Oscar.

Not gonna happen unless the game is some incredible introspective voyage and the 1980s references are changed into memories of the main character's lost wife/children that he's desperate to make contact with.

I give it 5/5.

It was deep and thought provoking and I still haven't been able to stop thinking about it.

A film hasn't used color in the way Nolan has here since Gone With The Wind and The Wizard Of Oz. Nolan's use of sound is so brilliant that this must have been what it was like for audiences when they first saw The Jazz Singer.

I'm so sick of films that are so hopelessly trying to market "nostalgia" and audiences rewarding them for it. Also, "references" are not jokes.

This sounds like some type of pandering garbage that Seth McFarline would scoop up.

Default Steven Spielberg's 'Ready Player One' - March 30, 2018

Quote:
The project first announced to be in the works almost five years ago (before the novel was even published), Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow have found a director for their planned big screen take on Ernie Cline’s Ready Player One in none other than Steven Spielberg! The three-time Academy Award winner will both direct and produce from an adapted screenplay by Zak Penn. Cline’s book, a New York Times bestseller, has been published in 40 countries and is officially described as follows:

In the near future, outcast teenager Wade Watts escapes from his bleak surroundings by logging in to the OASIS, a globally networked virtual utopia where users can lead idyllic alternate lives. When the eccentric billionaire who created the OASIS dies, he offers up his vast fortune as the prize in an elaborate treasure hunt. Along with gamers from around the world, Wade joins the adventure, and quickly finds himself pitted against powerful corporate foes and other ruthless competitors who will do anything, in the oasis or the real world, to reach the treasure first.

“We are thrilled to welcome Steven back to Warner Bros,” says Greg Silverman, President, Creative Development and Worldwide Production, Warner Bros. Pictures. “We had an historic series of collaborations in the 80s and 90s and have wanted to bring him back for years. As for READY PLAYER ONE, we have always felt that Steven was the dream director for this project.”

Spielberg’s latest Bridge of Spies, reteams him with leading Tom Hanks and is set to hit theaters this October 16. He’s also just beginning production on the Roald Dahl adaptation The BFG and is expected to begin work on Ready Player One immediately thereafter.

Donald De Line, Dan Farah and Kristie Macosko Krieger will also produce with Jesse Ehrman and Racheline Benveniste overseeing for the studio.

I'm a huge Spielberg fan, so I'm on board.

Spielberg is actually a big fan of gaming, so I can see why he would be attracted to this project.

So first Christopher Nolan takes over a Steven Spielberg project, now Steven Spielberg takes over a Christopher Nolan project.

I am very excited about this.

The book was a lot of fun to read, and Spielberg can definitely bring the visual aspect to this movie that it will need.

Here's an additional synopsis of the plot:

Quote:
In the year 2044, reality is an ugly place. The only time teenage Wade Watts really feels alive is when he's jacked into the virtual utopia known as the OASIS. Wade's devoted his life to studying the puzzles hidden within this world's digital confines—puzzles that are based on their creator's obsession with the pop culture of decades past and that promise massive power and fortune to whoever can unlock them.

But when Wade stumbles upon the first clue, he finds himself beset by players willing to kill to take this ultimate prize. The race is on, and if Wade's going to survive, he'll have to win—and confront the real world he's always been so desperate to escape.

I feel more like his doing this as a director-for-hire instead of his passion. But I've always wanted more sci-fi stuff from him, so bring it on.
