In this modern re-imagining of the world of L. Frank Baum's beloved "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz," a tornado sweeps a 20-year-old Dorothy Gale and a police dog into the air, casting them into the mystical land of Oz. There, Dorothy encounters familiar characters as she navigates a dangerous world of competing realms, lethal warriors and dark magic -- uncovering an unexpected destiny in the process. The young woman soon learns that she carries a burden she didn't ask for, holding the fate of these unfamiliar kingdoms in her hands.

'Emerald City' is a 'Game of Thrones'-style reboot of 'The Wizard of Oz'

I'm about to revisit Oz by watching the original, Return, and Great and Powerful. So I'll definitely give this new show a chance.

I'm in just because I love both Oz movies and I've always wanted to see more of that world. This works, especially since the film series seems to be dead in the water.

Right. I thought this was a really bad idea, then I saw that Tarsem was directing all ten episodes.

Unsurprisingly, the visuals are astonishing. But I've gotten pulled in by the characters and the interesting ways that they've "reimagined" Oz.

Everything I watch on NBC is on Hulu, so I doubt this would be an exception. That's where I'm planning to watch it since I forgot about it tonight.

I wasn't sure if I'd like this or not but in the end I found it entertaining though it does make me wish someone like Netflix would also do a series that's a straight up adaption of the books. I'll definitely continue watching even though I have a feeling it will be canceled, hopefully I'm wrong because it's nice to have something on tv that's different from the other shows on.

Some places seem to be referring to this run as "the first season", but NBC refers to it as an "event series", which is usually code for limited run mini-series. It's scheduled for 10 episodes, and I'm reasonably sure that NBC will air all of them -- though if it does poorly enough, they might burn off episodes on Saturdays instead -- but I'm not expecting anything beyond these 10.

While there's certainly room for a straight-up adaptation of the books -- because we've never actually gotten one to this day -- I actually like the fact that it's taking the basic premise and doing something wildly different. But then, I'm a fan of Modern Dress Shakespeare, so there's that.

Friday's ratings are up and it didn't do bad in the ratings, that being said it looks like a heavy SFX show and that could make it an expensive show to make. I'd like to think this has a chance of renewal since NBC is ending Grimm and it outdid Grimm in ratings
I'll be watching it tonight and I'll decide if I'll keep watching or not

Yeah I don't expect it to go past the 10 mini-series episodes either but so far I love it, not what I was expecting at all.

I expected great visuals, but I also got a really solid reinterpretation. I enjoyed it from start to finish. Really pleasantly surprised. Look forward to the other nine episodes, that are also thankfully directed by Tarsem.
