Default Special Edition Blu-Rays On The Horizon?

I'm not sure if this has been discussed before, but I'm just curious to see if more people would want nicer packaged Blu-Rays just like their DVD counterparts.

A perfect example is the Troy - Director's Cut (Ultimate Collector's Edition) on DVD http://www.amazon.com/Troy-Directors-Cut-Ultimate-Collectors/dp/B000TGJ8IU/ref=pd_bbs_2?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1198204906&sr=8-2 and Troy - The Director's Cut on Blu-ray http://www.amazon.com/Troy-Directors-Blu-ray-Brad-Pitt/dp/B000TGGJKU/ref=pd_bbs_sr_4?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1198204906&sr=8-4

That DVD version is such a nicer looking edition to own compared to the Blu Ray Version... Except of course for the movie picture. (There is also a normal Director's Cut on DVD just for the record, I'm just pointing to the fact that there isnt an Ultimate Version on Blu Ray.

Still, I would rather pay a bit more for a nicer edition of a Blu-Ray.

Another example is for a movie that I really want to get on Blu-Ray but again the differance between the normal DVD version and the Blu Ray one is a significant one if you get it on DVD.

I hate the fact that every BD I have is absolutely bare boned. I think maybe two of them have come with something that actually pertained to the movie. All the others just contained random blu-ray advertisements that I simply threw away.

I'd be all for paying a little extra to get some special packaging with nice booklets and whatever else they felt like adding.

Sure, but only for a select few movies, I don't mind bare bones for a good amount of them, but for my top 50 or so movies, I would definitely like a lot of special features and extras.

Well said, well said. On my favorite movies, I prefer a SHIT ton of extras. On a movie that I just want to watch a few times, extras dont mean anything to me. I cant wait to Blu becomes like DVD and they release 3 different versions at the same time so everyone can pick and chose what they want, (ie full screen, wide screen, 2 disc, directors cut + everything you can possibly imagine, etc)

Agree with all 3 of you guys. For my top 50 ones, I'd want better editions, because I too am getting Blu-Ray DVD's with a piece of paper inside that says something that my garbage can could have a better time reading.

Maybe in time they'll start making collector editions as well as normal editions, hopefully I havent built my huge collection by than.

At least the Blade Runner Blu-Ray 5 disc version came out as nice as the DVD version, or didnt it?

The classics should have more stuff in them.. the tried and true films like Die Hard, Aliens and so on so forth. Granted I don't read/watch much of it. However nothing is more depressing than a 28 dollar movie with nothing but a disc inside

Default Yes, more for your money

Yes totally agree with you guy's,
When will the sudio's see that the public want's more for its money, if you are going to pay extra for hd quality and you can get a standard dvd will heaps of exta's, even if you do not watch them, and cheaper, then studio's should put extra's on the disc and alternative versions of the movie.
One of my personal favourt movie is The Abyss with heaps of extra's and 2 versions of the movie.
So come on studio's pull you finger out and give us what we want and show that this format is here to stay. It is not like blu-ray hasn't the capacity for the extra's is it?

Exactly, what is the Blu-Ray edition of 30 Days of Night missing besides the comic book and non-standard packaging when compared to the DVD? Looking at your list, that's all the DVD has to offer.

I think were gonna have to wait until blu-ray officially wins the war before we start seeing studios putting more money, creativity and style into their movie releases and packaging. There were no super deluxe limited edition packaging when dvd's first came out either. But yes, I do think it would be cool to have some fancier cases for some classics like shawshank redemption, godfather trilogy and others though.

well if your into anime Bandai is great with extra stuff in their with their Blu-Ray sets, like Jin-Roh you get a full size book but as for extras on the disc there really isnt anything to speak about but then again the one i am expecting to have a lot of extras maybe even on a 2 disc set is Cowboy Bebop the movie which is if they release it with every extra the dvd version had but in HD. But the problem about Bandai is that their Blu-Ray cases are dvd cases. Luckily, Cowboy Bebop had Sony to do the movie along with Bandai so maybe that might get a normal Blu case

I don't want any special packaging and I don't care about inserts, but the more extras and special features on the disc the better, in my book.

thanks for clearing that up someone posted their collection the other day and all the bandai cases looked huge next to their normal blu cases.

I would certainly like to have Blu-ray packaging and extras match the level that DVD releases have achieved.

You hear that, Fox?

I'll pay more for remastered early Blu-rays..like Fantastic 4 etc., but I wont pay more for the same movie with more features.

I think Blurays are already a bit pricey as is. I wouldn't want special editions to become the norm but if there is a choice that is cool. It already hurts to pay $20+ for the same boxset I could get on dvd for shows.

Special Editions... for a premium / classic movie - Yes.

What I would be looking for is something similar to the CE3K release. Nice booklet relating to the movie in a nice slip case. The movie encoded with a V. high bitrate as well.

i like the fact that they all (or for the most part) look uniform. ive got better things in my living room to put on display than some crazy looking case, but thats just my personal opinion.

I agree, I for one enjoy all the extras, and would love to see more like the HP boxset and BR case...

If it were up to me they would all be like the old Superbit DVD's.

That is,.. sparse menus and just all the high quality audio and video you can possibly fit on the disc and nothing but the movie.

To me,.. the movie is a stand alone experience. I don't want to know how the stunts were done of if it rained when they were trying to get outdoors scenes done. I don't want all the actors to tell me how wonderful the director was and how having him in charge brought it all to another level.

The film is what it is and I'll think what I want about it and the finished product is what I care about not how much trouble they had making it or how much they want to congratulate themselves.

Lucky for you guys who like "extras" the decision isn't mine to make.

-Brian

p.s. I have no problems with a second disc packed with "extras." I'll never spin it but it serves a purpose and doesn't take anything away from the main attraction.
