No, it won't be a play.com exclusive - the blu-ray Steelbook was announced by Universal Pictures UK, and will be widely available. I don't see a listing up on Amazon UK yet, but hmv.com does, for the same price as play.com - £17.99. It will also be released in France in October.

This is a pre order for me! Does any one know if the uk versions will have true hd sound? I have purchased a few uk titltes recently and they have had only 5.1, but the US versions have had proper hd sound!

I think, since it's Universal, that we might get the DTS-HD Master Audio treatment.

The Paramount US release has DTS-HD Master Audio, and Universal typically uses DTS MA for their releases, so I would be surprised if Gladiator didn't have Master Audio.

And I meant to post this yesterday, but Amazon UK just put up the pre-order yesterday, at £13.99. I locked the price in with a pre-order for Gladiator and Whitnail and I, which releases a week before. Amazon UK has already raised the price (for new pre-orders) to £17.99, in line with other UK online merchants.

It will very likely be Region B coded, so it will not play on North American PS3s and standalone players. Universal released "Mongol" in the UK Region B locked, as New Line/Warner released the blu-ray in the U.S. I would expect them to hold to that pattern when they hold non-US rights to a movie that another major studio has the US rights for distribution.

Wont think twice about pre-ordering this if play or amazon confirm it's a steelbook.

It might! It looks as if Universal releases most (not all) of its UK titles region free. Go to the link and filter Universal.

Yes. But - almost every one of the region free releases are Universal movies in the US & Canada. Look at the few that are Region B:

House of the Flying Daggers - Sony owns US & Canada distribution rights
Mongol - New Line/Warner in US & Canada
Step Up - Touchstone/Disney in US & Canada

Universal releases its movie region free in North America, and releases those movies region free in Europe. But when another studio owns the North American rights and Universal owns non US rights, they region code them.

Good point! I never thought of it that way. I just figured that if all three of these studios (Paramount, Dreamworks and Universal) release the majority of their movies region free in the UK, then its reasonable to assume that they will with Gladiator.

Amazon uk right now is at 14.98 pounds for those interested in a pre-order. I did and hopefully region coding will be confirmed before ship date. What a title to be a steel

I know what you mean, but I guess I've been extremely lucky all these months (might also be because I'm not extremely touchy like some).

I've ordered the UK version too. Fingers crossed it does turn out to be a steelbook but Amazon don't list it as one and niether do Play.com and they both show the same cover.
