Default Samsung firmware is here!!!!!!!!

I got a tip over at AVS so I called....
Ok!!!! Just called Samsung... They are shipping me one. Should be here between a week and 10 days. When asked what it fixes... he said fixes the softness issue(it turns off NR chip... you will not be able to turn it on again) and makes it BD-J(I think thats what its called) compatability. Its been out for a week or two(I wish they would of told us that!!!!)
I asked if you can notice a difference... He said yes it sharpens the picture but you see more flaws.
He also said it will be available on their site shortly for download(no eta).

When you call try to get to level 2 tech support... The regular call takers are a bunch of monkeys....
Have your serial # ready also!!!!
Good luck!!!!

I wonder how you can tell what firmware you have.

I think that one way is the 'wait' icon - the player I have currently has coloured dots that pulsate in a row (kinda like Knight Rider) whereas the one I saw at Best Buy iirc had the hourglass for waiting.

Does anyone have any insight? It would be useful to know what versions are out and whether recent manufacture boxes still are not totally current...

Supposedly, you can tell the firmware version by holding down the "Info" button on the remote for about 4 seconds while the disc tray is open. I bought my Samsung at launch and this is what it displays...

LDR:529F / Front: 21
PSD:60605.1
DMN:060526.01 Region:01

Unfortunately, I don't know what all of that means (with the exception of the region code)

I just got off the phone with level 2 support at Samsung and he told me that while there is a firmware update for the Samsung, it does not address the NR chip setting. He said that update won't be available until the end of October. He asked that I report such so people would stop calling.

I will try this and let you know what mine says.

When these peeps get their update discs they can tell us what theirs says before and after too

What exactly did he say this firmware fix is for??? When I called he said it was for the NR chip and even remarked on the PQ??????

Chad, it seems like it depends on who you talk to... cant you use your "connections" to verify this??????????

Ah confusions, confusions.

I just hope that with the final late October firmware, the Samsung BD player will be the same across the board and we can lay minimize its effect on the playback chain. Hopefully we can finally agree which discs look like crap and which looks great.

I wasn't doubting you... I had already ordered my disc before even logging on here... I just figured I would post as well, as people are often skeptical about a single person posting information like this, the more people the merrier. I was backing you up before the flamers/doubters start to come in...

Thats why I like this place... none of those types around!!!! Any comment on Chads post???? It dosent sound like he was talking to a source... just a regular level 2 guy who could just be lazy or pissed off with the larger than usual call volume today. What exactly did your rep say?????

[flame retardant on]
Aaah it will never fix anything Bluray is the devil spawn of Sony and Sony are evil and no firmware fix will make this even close to as good as an upconverted VHS tape. You guys should sell the Samsung player and get the Toshiba HD DVD player with the proceeds since it is so cost effective to manufacture HD DVD players and the discs are great and you need one to watch King Kong when it comes out because Universal knows how evil Sony is and won't ever release King Kong on your Sony format you losers ahahahaha!
[flame retardant off]

I don't know what came over me...!

I think he alluded to the possibility maybe they mistakenly told some people wrong, maybe before realizing it was an update for something else instead. He was very clear that it wouldn't address NR though and that such wouldn't be available until the end of the month. I don't have any connections with Samsung. This is the first Samsung product I've ever owned. I'll call back tomorrow though in hopes of getting somebody else. Though, that won't definately indicate who's right or who's wrong, so I'll try to get them to verify it for me one way or the other.

When I called the guy asked for my phone number... He looked me up and could tell that I had never called Samsung support before. He took down all of my info and then asked me what I needed. I told him that my rep said that I could get a firmware disc sent to me. He then put me on hold for about 2 mins and then came back and verified my info, asked me a few questions about the player and said my disc would be on its way.

Ok I gave it a shot and the lady seemed to know the answers to questions I hadn't asked. She told me the update I'd recieve would bring my player "up to date" and that there would be another update in a few weeks. I think this FW is meant for the first builds, The upcoming one is the one that fixes the NR chip.

On the player I have borrowed:

LDR:718F / Front: 21
PSD:60630.1
DMN:060703.01 Region:01

so... DMN is a date? July 3 2006?

PSD could also be a date June 30 2006?

718F is probably a firmware revision.

Thoughts?
