Default Fate of the UMD

It seems wherever I looked, I see ads for UMD movies for the PSP, but if I am not mistaken, didn't most of the Hollywood Studios pull some of their support for UMD Movies since the sales weren't as high as they hoped? I mean, the only reason why I see UMD existing is because that is the format that PSP Games come in. I know Sony is still supportive of their UMD format given its their technology, but how do the other studios feel about it currently?

Has there been any talk as to other "purposes" the UMD might serve or is it pretty much guaranteed a dead format once the PSP is declared obsolete or Sony invents another new format for its PSP2 or so?

Anyone have any info about this? Thanks.

Exactly. I would personally never buy one only because the only place that disc works is in the PSP.

I buy them when the price is right. I just ordered the Fifth Element from Gamestop for $4.99 with free shipping.

PSP / UMDs are awesome for long plane trips.

I suppose. I use my iPhone. I just use Handbrake to convert my currently owned DVD's into mp4 and then put them onto the iPhone. Free is the best value

$4.99 is good tho too.

I like the movies. I use the PSP as my travel dvd player. I detest airports and airline travel but it's a must at times and having something small enough to fit in my computer case and I can just pop in a movie and relax is a nice feature.

Like others here I buy some UMD movies but only if the price is right. I haven't bought any for over 10 dollars.

I imagine the next PSP will incorporate a blu-ray based UMD sized disc, making it backward compatible with the current library.

I never had interest in UMD movies; I'd get a portable DVD player for that. I do think UMD is good for a portable gaming device like the PSP.

Just watched my first UMD feature last night. I was surprised by the picture quality, but the ghosting during fast action is a bit annoying. I picked up a bunch of movies for $4 during Black Friday. Personally I think they are only worth $5 so as long as I can find them for that or less I'll buy some. They do make travel great.
