This question was sparked by seeing a comment on reddit where someone observed how many DVD collections were likely to contain at least one series boxset of 24. This made sense and I'm sure sales figures would back it up. It's certainly a series that a lot of people binge watched at one point or another. Was wondering if anyone else had any observations like this? What boxsets or individual DVDs do you think you'd be most likely to find in any given DVD collection?

I tend to buy box lots of dvd - for me it's a better deal since I'm interested in a lot of animated and tv series titles.
In the last year I've had S1 of 24 three times now! - no demand and lots of availability = vast supplies with little to no resell value. Dexter, Sex in the City, earlier US 's Office, S1-3 Walking Dead are ones I get stuck taking regularly. Since they have little value - I just give them away, or donate, or save the cases and scrap or box lot for crafts the discs. |

How often would you find a DVD in one of these bundles still in it's plastic wrap? I'm slightly surprised about Sex and the City, I would have thought that series would have been sentimental for some and might have been rewatched a bit more than other sets. Are there any other trends you have observed amongst these bundles? |

As to bundles, it's occasionally still in plastic, but nothing that I can recall stands out, usually it's just random forgettable titles. "Sex in the City' was very popular with US troops in the early days of the 2nd Gulf war etc and has seen a couple 'complete' series releases. I suspect it lost its relevancy. The only things that come to mind is the amount of unwanted Harry Potter, Twilight, and Shrek dvds that I dump. My bet would be that most people have switched to streaming and have moved on from physical media. It's not a popular opinion here, but we are at the end of the era disc based formats. |

Ha, I was curious if Twilight would be mentioned. Interesting that a film like Shrek would be let go. A modern classic like that not being kept around suggests people really are purging their complete collections and don't anticipate not being able to stream it.
Absolutely true about people switching to streaming. I noticed you mentioned that the Walking Dead seasons you typically find in these bundles end at season 3 which would be 2013 and around the time streaming really took off. Also, I did a quick search of ebay UK and it is incredible how many more boxsets of 24 are for sale than of Prison Break, another hugely popular show. 24 really does seem to have been the definitive DVD box set series and hugely influential in terms of modern binge watching culture. |
