USA Hardcore (1979) (Special Edition) (Kino Lorber Studio Classics)

Kino will be doing a new release of Paul Schrader's Hardcore (1979) on August 22nd. This Special Edition will come with a limited edition slipcover, as well as two commentary tracks, with one from Schrader.

Quote:
Coming August 22nd!

Hardcore (1979)
• Audio Commentary by Writer/Director Paul Schrader
• Audio Commentary by Film Historians Eddy Friedfeld, Lee Pfeiffer and Paul Scrabo
• Theatrical Trailer
• Reversible Art
• Limited Edition O-Card Slipcase
• Optional English Subtitles

Color 108 Minutes 1.85:1 Rated R
Screen legend George C. Scott (Patton, The Day of the Dolphin) gives a strong, sensitive portrayal of a deeply religious Midwestern businessman whose daughter, while on a church-sponsored outing, runs away from home. He hires an oddball detective (Peter Boyle, The Brink’s Job), who learns that the daughter has been making cheap sex films. When the father realizes that he can no longer trust the detective, he decides to hunt for his daughter himself. Posing as a porno film producer casting a new movie, he gathers clues with ferocious determination. Finally, with the help of a prostitute (Season Hubley, Vice Squad), he locates his daughter. But is it too late? Paul Schrader, writer (Taxi Driver, Raging Bull) and director (Blue Collar, American Gigolo), presents a powerful, unflinching glimpse into the dark, bizarre world of the pornography industry. Featuring cinematography by Michael Chapman (Invasion of the Body Snatchers) and music by Jack Nitzsche (The Exorcist).

Yeah, it is unfortunate they couldn't get 4K rights from Sony, but it seems they're not easy to deal with. I'm not even sure if Kino will be allowed to do new extras for this release now that I think about it. Sony often doesn't allow that. I suppose with this being just added to Amazon, and not formally announced, there's the tiniest of chances there could be a 4K release too, but I wouldn't bet on it.

Wonder if they’ll get the Paul Schrader commentary from the Twilight Time release. It’s a good, brutally honest one (as you’d probably expect from Schrader).

Either that or it comes with a CD of Jack Nitzsche's never released score.

This is one of those movies that's caught in an endless licensing loop. I had the Twilight Time and then got the Indicator. Think I'm good for now.

On their Facebook page, Kino replied to a comment about some of their newer Sony titles being bare-bones and they claimed "their (Sony) legal department are busy and would rather not deal with approving/disapproving extras". I assume titles like "The Lady From Shanghai", "Blind Fury", and "Happy Birthday to Me" were probably some of the earliest Sony licenses Kino worked on and that's why they have new extras. Though, honestly, considering the hassle of the Sony deal, I wouldn't be surprised if Kino just wanted to dump the remaining licenses with not much resources dedicated to them (in addition to the supposed approval process).

This is great. Looking at the Indicator release, none of the special features seem noteworthy to me personally. The TT commentary track is a must include though.

Just got the Indicator release in the last sale, love it. Like others have said, I really cannot think of a reason to get this if it isn't 4K and has no new extras. While I love this film and I'm glad to see it available in the US again, the Indicator is region free and relatively inexpensive in their great sales!

Officially announced by Kino. It's lacking in extras compared to the Indicator release, but it thankfully does include the two commentary tracks from the TT release.

I know it's kind of impractical, but wish the reverse jacket art had been the slipcover instead.

"Turn it off! Turn it OFF!!!"

Nobody chews the scenery quite like George C. Scott.

Didn't someone also say that Sony has a rule now that any bonus features produced by boutique labels for licensed Sony films become Sony property.

If you are into soundtracks, there is a very nice doc on Jack Nitzsche, along with the isolated score (as on the TT release).

It's a good package and the encoding is excellent. I had the LE but still picked up a second copy as a spare in the recent sale. It was £4, which came to about $6 with conversion and shipping factored in.

I was all jazzed about not needing to double-dip, but then I kept reading and realize I am not only missing a Schrader commentary but that it's a brutally good Schrader commentary! Dangit!

So as someone who owns the Indicator and not the TT, I'm missing out on a great commentary track from Schrader if I skip this? Tough call.

This is such an excellent film. Proud owner of the Indicator release. Can't recommend this one enough to anyone who is a fan of George C. Scott and/or Paul Schrader. Unfortunate this new one from KL is not 4K. That would've been a wonderful surprise amongst all the great 4K releases we're getting this year.
