Default Sherlock Gnomes (Paramount Animation, 2018)

Mikros Image to lead digital animation on Paramount and MGM title.

Sir Elton John’s Rocket Pictures has appointed French animation and VFX outfit Mikros Image to lead digital animation on upcoming Paramount and MGM sequel Gnomeo & Juliet: Sherlock Gnomes.

The animation will be handled between Mikros Paris and a new Mikros Animation studio in London.

John Stevenson (Kung Fu Panda) will direct the detective animation which is produced by Steve Hamilton Shaw (Gnomeo & Juliet), Carolyn Soper (Tangled) Sir Elton John (The Lion King) and David Furnish (Gnomeo & Juliet).

Eric Leighton is animation director, Karen de Jong is the production designer, and Freddy Chaleur returns as VFX supervisor. Rob Stevenhagen is heading up the story team.

Last year, Johnny Depp was reported to be joining the film’s returning voice cast of James McAvoy and Emily Blunt.

Two gnome movies on the front page? Didn't realize people cared so much about gnomes

The "gnome puns" movie genre is surprisingly prolific

I saw the first one in theaters back in 2011. I thought it was cute, I guess, but except for an airing on Starz, I haven't really felt a desire to revisit it. Also, how did it transfer from Disney to Paramount and MGM?

Seriously though, Paramount needs a hit. BADLY. I hope that this succeeds for their sake, and for the sake of having recent family films in Paramount's library that aren't Nickelodeon-related.

I watched the trailer for this yesterday on Facebook, thinking it looked cute from the thumbnail image and having no idea it was a sequel to a movie I don't even remember seeing ads for.

It looked bad. Very bad. Although I admit the "No ship, Sherlock" joke made me laugh.

Well, the also have Amusement Park, coming out in 2019. So there are two chances already. Who knows. Don't think Gnomes is going to be a big hit, though.

I'm looking forward to Amusement Park. I just think that Paramount Animation's problem so far is that most of their library is required to have some connection to Nickelodeon (Sponge Out of Water and SpongeBob 3, Monster Trucks having the Nickelodeon name tacked on, The Loud House Movie, even AP being the pilot for a future Nicktoon). That this doesn't have any Nick-branding on it is a step in the right direction, at least for me, but I know that the chances of it being a hit aren't big.

Amusement Park might have a Nickelodeon connection, though. Since there's an animated series coming out at the same time.

I haven't seen the first one, so I don't know if either one really qualifies as family movies.

I mean, is this really all that bad that there are no reviews for it and opens in less than 24 hours? It's from the director of the first Kung Fu Panda which is great, how bad could this be?

I just think nobody really cares for this. I mean, even among kids, there's no buzz about this at all. Seems that nobody was waiting for this. It looks OK to me, harmless fun, silly jokes. I haven't seen the first one, though.

I liked it a lot, will be only one the few on here. . There was some stuff in the trailer that wasn’t in the movie. (Farting/dancing gnome, Sherlock breaking the gnomes hat, no ship Sherlock, red thumb tac)

The animation was beautiful. Lots of colors.

Good to hear some of those jokes aren't actually in the movie.
