Default A Cuban sandwich sounds good today!

I have not had once since 2003. I was in Orlando at Digestive Disease Week. I had one for breakfast one day. I don't think they know what they are here.

The OP can correct me if I'm wrong, but the ones I've had have sliced pork loin, ham, swiss cheese, pickles, and either mustard or a mustard/mayo combination, and the bread is essentially a grinder roll except thinner, and it's toasted.

And yes, they are delicious.

Bon mai (Vietnamese sandwich) is delicious. This Cuban sandwich doesn't sound that good, but that's because I hate mustard and mayo (and pickles).

They're not just toasted, they're pressed.

I wouldn't half mind one of those, either.

Cuban sandwiches, and Spanish food in general, are the main reasons I'm hesitant about moving away from Tampa. I love cuban sandwiches, chicken and yellow rice, and platanos. I don't think most people know what Spanish food is outside of concentrated Spanish areas. I always kind of lumped it in with Mexican, and they're really nothing alike.

There are a couple variations on Cuban sandwiches, but a proper Cuban is as described above: sliced pork, ham, swiss, pickles, mayo and mustard. Ham is usually the staple, but some places substitute salami for the pork, and it's not nearly as good.

If you're ever in the Tampa area, check out La Septima in Brandon, Fl. It's excellent.

A proper Muffaletta is a pretty good sandwich, too.

I am fortunate that my wife is Puerto Rican/Portugese mix with all kinds of European background... She got this awesome recipe from her grandma for Spanish rice and Pasteles... this food is to die for! The only thing is I don't like olives and they use a lot!

But you're right a lot of people mix it up with Mexian food, and a lot of them also think Taco Bell is authentic Mexican!

Hah! This is funny!

One of my good friends in training was from Panama. It was very annoying to him that so many would ask about his native cuisine and start getting into tacos and burritos.

Oh, I can relate to that... With my in-laws its always been between sticky (spanish) rice or flaky (mexican) rice!

Digestive Disease week sounds really gross.

However, the Cuban is a wonderful sandwich. Just happened to have my first last week, a suprise from my wife she said it had all the things I like on it.

I know what you mean. Love the chicken & yellow rice and cuban sandwiches.

Back in the day when we use to visit the family in Riverview, FL.. we always ate at that seafood resturant with the stuffed devil crabs (breaded all the way around). Can't think of the name of the resturant though. Just remember they were the only ones that served it like that and everyone wanted their recipe. (yes I know, were talking about spanish food and now here I am switching to seafood)
