The format wars were a strange time, especially for those two or three months around the Transformers HD DVD release. It was so great when Blu-ray still beat HD DVD in sales the first week of release for Transformers. You have to love those BOGO sales.

Those days and months were truly frightening. I kept checking in on a daily basis to see where the war was headed. I was also dumbfounded at Paramount's inept and ill advised decision to throw blu-ray and perhaps us, under a bus, only to find themselves coming back with their well deserved tail between their legs... Ahh... Sweet Victory...

You would be surprised. I was too young to participate in the DVD vs. DIVX war back in the day, but I still clearly remember it. I'm sure the people who waited (and are still waiting) have at least some semblance that there was much going on before they hopped aboard.

I still wonder if Paramount actually came out ahead with that allegedly boneheaded maneuver. All it had to do was wait a few months, and it got to collect $150 with almost no penalty. I still doubt that they would have been able to make nearly as much money through disc—much less high-def disc—sales.

I remember when Circuit City was pushing DIVX. What a laugh. I bought Marked For Death and The Abyss so I could have them as coasters. I figured those were the appropriate titles to get knowing it would be short lived.
