Default Today is a sad day

Was just playing some GTAIV and my launch 60GB PS3 just bit the dust. I can play for 15-20 min then the game will freeze and I will have to power off the system. I think it's the lens but usually when that happens the ps3 won't read any blu-ray disks.

If anyone has any ideas and the number to Sony it would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you to everyone for your condolences. Just got off the phone with Sony... $150 to fix is a bummer. I'm tempted to just buy a new 160GB system and call it a day since I don't play PS2 games. Hmm…I’m going to sleep on it and figure it out in the AM.

It sounds like you need to replace the laser. If you need assistance let me know! As it'll cost you approx $50-$70 for the replacement laser. So you will be saving almost $100 by doing it my way.

Check out my thread if you are interested.

https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=70948

The symptoms you are having sounds exactly the same as mine. As my laser would still 'read' Blu-Ray discs, but would only play them for only 10-15 minutes after it 'cooled down' for awhile. But after that it would freeze up after 2-3 minutes of playing.

A good test to see if it is the laser is to try to play some DVDs and CDs and see if they play with no problem. I recommend leaving it play for the feature length just to verify.

The higher the technology the more delicate the machine is. One must be careful with it at all times, no liquids too close to it of course, not a closed space for it or it will overheat, keeping it clean and not dusty, making sure the discs one inserts are clean (avoiding if possible rented movies and second hand games). Oh and most importantly keep kids away from it.

This is happening to EVERYONE'S launch 60GB (including mine ). I wish Sony would recognize the problem and do something about it.

Some how I am looking at this from the other side of the fence. I can't say that my PS3 has many problems. I indeed, as many of you, got mine at launch but I had freezing up until the put out the first couple of updates everything since then has been smooth sailing. But my Xbox on the other hand has been sent back more than 8 times and no that is no mere exaggeration. You should all feel lucky not having been sucked into to Microsofts dirty trap. They knew when they launched their systems that they were flawed. They just wanted to be the first on the market. Now the state of california is taking bill gates to court. Now they updated their software on the xbox's to a more family orientated system...really they just copied nintendo. I hope nintendo gets what they deserve from them too.

It seems that everything I read about PS3 failures (very little BTW), its always the 60GB model.

If they wanted to they could gold plate it and make it do things nobody elses can. But more than likely, they will just fix it.

Its not always the 60GB model as the laser for me which failed was the 80GB Motorstorm Bundle. But as I stated before, anyone can replace their laser if they wish by following my tutorial and I will answer any questions if necessary.

This seems stupid to say ... but try unplugging your system and plugging it back in... when my ps3 showed signs of having sh!t the bed I did that and it has worked ever since ...

Mine would turn on, beep a few times and turn off ...

Where did you buy it from??? Did you buy any extended warrantee??? SEE THAT's why I tell people to get that PSP (Performance Service Plan) from Best Buy. They WILL TEST IT and WILL SWAP IT OUT FOR YOU. But anyway, all things happen for a reason, it's probably good thing, now U dont have one, meaning U would probably be more interested in....hmmm i dunno...the 160gb, good luck man, best wishes from a non ps3 owner...
